Amex Preferred Rewards Gol Card 2nd year fee

Hi all,

So I hadn't realised that my 1st year (which is membership fee-free) was coming to an end. AMEX didn't inform me or send me reminders like they do when each monthly statement is due. I logged in today to see on the 5th July they charged me £140 membership fee and want it by the 18th. I haven't even used the card since January.

My question is what are the chances I can get it cancelled and not have to pay anything? I was planning on cancelling it anyways. I admit TECHNICALLY it's my fault but they didn't remind me and it's clearly a sneaky tactic because they always remind me when a statement is due,

Thanks,
Alex

Call them. You may be able to get an 11/12th refund, i.e. not for the month you (may or may not) have used it.

No, it's not sneaky. It's all in the t+cs, which you agreed to.
  • It is sneaky that they don't send reminders. Anyway, I called them and it's fine. Since it's only been a few days since I was charged the fee I got it cancelled and cancelled the card.

If you have the app installed or use the website the anniversary date shows up on them, however give them a call and they may refund it as they are quite good.
  • Slightly related: I got the same card because of the fee-free year, and I'm not sure if the rewards are worth the fee. If not, I'd rather downgrade to the standard card, which costs £60, or the blue one with no rewards. Did anyone manage to do that calling the customer service near the first year deadline?

No it's not sneaky and not a cat-in-hell's chance of getting the membership fee refunded. You agreed to it, period.

I have 13 direct debits / automatic payments in two countries and none send me reminders. You forgot the date of renewal: Why is that the fault of Amex?

Not a helpful comment at all. Not least because the OP says it has now been refunded. The correct advice would have been to ring and ask, but not expect/demand anything.

In future, remember, if you don't have anything nice to say....

OP, if you want an AMEX card and no fee, but with rewards. You could try collecting Air Miles on the BA Amex Card?
