Advice Please On Anti-Virus/Anti-Adware Programs

I don’t use my PC much these days, more inclined to use my ipad, but my little grandniece uses it for some of her schoolwork. Anyway I had occasion to use it over the weekend and discovered it had got infected by adware and suchlike. Sometime back I installed Reimage and I think that is where my trouble started. I hadn’t got a virus checker or anything else on it so now I think it’s time to smarten up and get some good protection
While writing this I’m doing a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free) but would like to know what you guys think is the best of this type of software out there.
My needs: get rid of any ad type software that works its way onto the computer, a decent virus scanner and removal tool. As mentioned above I don’t really use the PC that much, maybe for long letters and suchlike. I’d appreciate your recommendations and I’m not particularly tech savvy so wouldn’t really have the confidence to go deleting files in the likes of the registry.
As always many thanks for your advice

I use Malwarebytes thingamy - I think I downloaded from a link on MSE somewhere, but can't remember where. I did have McAfee anti virus which was free with plusnet, but I upgraded to unlimited fibre, and it was no longer free. I now use Kaspersky which is free from Barclays if you have an online account with them. Might be worth checking your internet provider to see if they offer anything free.0

Never thought of that I'm with BTBigphil1474 wrote: »Might be worth checking your internet provider to see if they offer anything free.0 -
MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware is good. (Just disable the free trial of the premium version during installation.)

Avast is a decent free anti-virus. (Choose a custom installation and untick most of the junk options -- the "shields" are the actual antivirus components.)

SpywareBlaster blocks malicious sites in popular web browsers.

And adwCleaner is a malware remover like MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware.
