Windows 10 further problems

I have installed Windows 10 - it said all files and folders would be saved and it seemed to be OK for a couple of days but then it updated again (by itself) and now I've lost all my bookmarks, all my files with photos (many of which I am gutted to have lost), saved music and other documents that I wanted to keep. I didn't back anything up as it said everything would be saved and be as it was - which I should not have believed.

My question is can I retrieve these and if so where would they be? I've tried looking but can't see them anywhere - all the files I click on say they are empty. OR if I uninstall Windows 10 and go back to Windows 7 will my documents and files etc all still be there as they were or have I lost them for good?

Any help much appreciated.

Are you sure you're still using the same account as you did previously?
Have a look on local disk, Users folder and there should be a folder in there for each user (plus other folders). Maybe you'll see another account name you have used.

    No excuse I'm afraid.
    Look in windows.old in the c:\ https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/17125/windows-8-restore-files-old-folder-upgrade

Which browser were the bookmarks saved in?
  • Strangely today when I switched on nothing was happening so I had to switch off and start again and my screensaver then reappeared which had been missing since the install, also my bookmarks are back and my photos and files. I'm scared to shut down now in case I lose everything again.

Don't be scared. Backup your important pictures, documents etc now.

Slightly OT perhaps, but I did an 'upgrade to W10' on my niece's PC and CCleaner, that I used before I upgraded (using my W10 CD) and after that, CCleaner was no longer there!
I soon D/L it and it was fine.

    Confused dot com!

W10 does remove applications which Microsoft consider incompatible. but as you say easily remedied/

Is it possible that you have 2 user profiles? I had one normal user profile and one 'outlook' profile. I'd set everything up for the normal profile (files, settings homepage etc) but a few days later it seemed to lock me out of that profile and would only accept the outlook one.

My boy had similar issues when he opted to uninstall the Cortana component.

Yes it's entirely possible I have two profiles but being almost computer illiterate I don't know how to sort this. At the moment all is well and my daughter should be able to sort me out at the weekend.
Having lots of problems with Google Chrome though (and I was before Windows 10). Keep getting the "not responding" message and then the whole thing seems to freeze and I end up having to shut down and start again with Mozilla.

I have still not solved the slow running/freezing/failure to boot up, shut down issues, which have affected my PC since the forced move to Windows 10.
I have had so many different suggestions from people, that it seems like it could be any number of software or hardware issues.
I have run Ccleaner, Advcleaner, Malwarebytes (totally clean). There was a suggestion that loose SATA leads could be the culprit, particularly after hitting F9 key at startup and running diagnostics - Memory fine, Processor fine, but a problem with communication with the hard disk.
I have also been told that 3GB of RAM is not enough to handle Windows 10, which is really annoying, because that is why I held off from upgrading in the first place.
I know that I can put 8GB of RAM in for around £30, but what if that doesn't cure it?
I have had people suggest that I disable/stop "some" of the startup programmes - but which ones?
