Removing paints from stairs

I am ready to start work on the steps on the stairs.
They have been painted in the past with white paint and brown varnish from the last owners.
I want to remove the paint (gloss) and varnish but never tried before and wondered if sanding them or using a heat gun is the best way to start?
Money is tight and that's the reason I am doing this myself and can't spend a lot out. I have the patience and time to do the work.
Many thanks in advance!

We had carpetless , painted stairs when we first moved into our current house. I loathed it. it was like fluff hell, I was constantly sweeping up loads of "stuff" from all over them . Also, when the carpet was finally fitted our neighbour said she heaved a sigh of relief as every time we'd gone up or down the stairs it was really loud in their house!0

If you just want to remove the glossiness of the paint, you may any gloss off chemical or sand the surface gently.0
