Trading in old car for another used one - road tax?
We are currently trading in our old car for a slightly newer one, and have managed to received a yeas road tax from the garage, however our existing car still has 5 months road tax left, are we able to reclaim the road tax or will the garage be expecting the disc to remain with the car after it has been sold.
Any advice much appreciated.

Cash it in yourself!
The garage will only do that once they have the car as they dont know how long it'll be sat on their forecourt. They will sell it to the next buyers with 6/12 months' tax (as they have done with you).
I've traded in 2 cars with dealers and both times I have collected the road tax back.0 -
If you don't cash it in the garage will sometimes the price they give you on your car takes the tax into account0

cash it in if its a significant amount as the dealer will be able to put trade plates on it to drive it on the road legally.
they will cash it in themselves as it could be on thier fourcourt for a while yet....work permit granted!0 -
If the dealer offered you a trade-in value after INSPECTING you car and you hadn't already taken your tax disc off the windscreen beforehand, their offer will have INCLUDED the tax disc, so be ready for an argument at the garage!!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0

Hmmmmm... I always value peoples PX cars PLUS the road tax.
"£2500, plus what ever cash-in value the road tax has left" as how I phrase it. Or what ever the cars value is...
And I always write it down cos i'm not always there and customers try it on when they see a different face lol.0 -
Thanks for all the replies.
We took the road tax disc out of the car and mentioned to the garage that as they hadn't stated that the price was to include the road tax we would be reclaiming it, they just said okay and nothing more was mentioned.:D0
