I've tried to upgrade toWindows 10 tonight, but have ended up with a shortcut on my desktop: Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant.
I click on it and it simply goes round in circles, always ending up with the upgrade shortcut.
So what do I do next??

go to the microsoft download center and click the windows tab (low down screen on left) follow from there.

TOP TIP!
switch OFF windows updates before you start to upgrade otherwise any outstanding updates on existing operating system will load first and it will just stick in a never ending cycle of downloading updates.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. But what am I supposed to do with the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant? It's only a 5.5mb download, and I've now used another laptop on Win8.1 and it's wanting to download the same thing.David.0

The Windows 10 upgrade can be done directly from this Microsoft page;
