Hit and run claim help

Hi All been involved in one of those today on my motorcycle.
Road rage incident more like.

Anyhu to the point got picture of licence plate, got description of driver and gave it all to police plus they spoke to witnesses.

Still doubt they will find the guy.

So my problem is below.

I can do repair on my own quite cheaply if I am patient on eBay (600 to 700 GBP tops). Bar 1 item it is all cosmetic.

Would prefer not to pay for it if I can claim of 3rd Party but if I were to go via my insurance do not want to claim as will pay back in premium next few years.
Today my insurance company told me:

1. I have to give them bike for inspection - agreed
2. They will then keep it till its fixed, I can pay for fix out of my insurance and they will claim back from 3rd party. However if 3rd party cannot be found it will be on my insurance.
As such for now said no.

I told them I can get it Road worthy in few hours if I have parts for fraction of their repair cost.
I was told 3rd party will refuse to pay if I do repair on my own.
Even if I have official estimate before repair.

Is that correct?

I mean why am I being a victim again and am told to wait for up to 3 months when I can do it in few days with postage.

Advice please.
Any laws say that they cannot pay or that they have to pay?

I would expect the third party insurer needs to verify the damage before any repair is carried out.

If you repair it yourself cheaply using ebay, that's all you can claim off the other driver. You can't claim for repair costs you've not incurred.

How big is your excess? If you claim, your insurance will probably rise next year, but it sounds like you have a strong case for the other party paying. With a description of driver including witnesses and a picture of number plate, it should be easy to trace, especially if his car showed signs of damage.
