Provider switchover cancelled 6 months into contract?!

Hi all,

I have searched the site and forum and cannot see a similar scenario so I am posting in the hope that someone can steer us in the right direction!

We moved into a rental property in September 2015 and did a switchover online to EDF. Received confirmation from them and paperwork for the contract for dual fuel, paid by Direct Debit. We provided initial meter readings and the DD was going out as expected.

Over the next few months there was a query about our meter number so we provided this and they also sent out an inspector to check the meter (it's on the outside wall of the flat). They explained that the meter had been registered incorrectly on the national database but all was fine since the check and there was nothing we needed to do. The DD actually decreased by £4 pm with the updated meter readings. All is good.

Fast forward to now; we have received a bill of over £230 from EON for the gas supply since September! It turns out that EDF cancelled our dual fuel rate in April (no communication about this) and changed our billing to Electricity Only. They have refunded part of our DD payments for the Gas part of the dual fuel payments. Obviously the tariff for the EON bill is v. high as it is Standard Rate Tariff and we would be really out of pocket if we used the EDF refund to pay the bill to EON for the gas supply (would never cover it).

I have never come across this before and am very confused as to how to proceed... I believed that our contract was with EDF (and we did have confirmation from them that the switchover had happened for both electricity and gas supplies) so I am unsure who we should be paying now...

It seems unfair that EDF can go back on the dual fuel contract, refund some money and then say we have to pay EON as the gas bill is nothing to do with them?!

Any help would be very greatly appreciated for how we can sort this out! Thank you for reading this far :)

    Hi Choclate Buttons

I would presume, from what you have described, that EDF have found out they have taken over the wrong supply number for your property, hence the query about the Meter Serial Number and arranged an Erroneous Transfer back to the previous supplier.

Under this industry process / arrangement they agree not to bill you for the period they supplied the property and in your case Eon would bill you on a deemed contract.

It would appear that EDF have followed this process correctly by refunding any payments they received for the Gas supply during their supply period. However, it doesn't appear they have explained this process to you very clearly. I would have expected them to have contacted you and made arrangements to take over the correct gas supply number. Is the property a new build? as the error could have been caused by vague information on the National Database for an Independent Gas Transporter site

Did you contact the 'Deemed Supplier' before you initiated the switch?

    Morning chocolate.buttons,

Some good information from the other posters, so thank you for this.

I'd ask the same question as Hengus, as it sounds like we supplied the property before you moved in.

Did you contact us with your start reads and details etc?

It does sound like things have been put right, but we supply the gas and EDF the electricity.

I can't comment on other suppliers, but in our case you can speak to us ask about tariff's, decide who'd you'd like to be supplying and talk to us about a payment arrangement.

If I can offer any more information, please ask.

    Thank you
