Post Office credit card

in Credit cards
Hi All
I recently applied for a Post Office credit card but my application was immediately declined with the recommendation that I look at my Experian credit report. I did this and I have a credit score of 999 out of 999 and my rating is 'excellent'. I contacted the Post Office and told them this and asked why I had been declined and they would only say that I did not meet their criteria but refused to say what their criteria is, other than checking with Experian. Has anyone else experienced this, or could anyone suggest why I would be declined? I work full time and my salary is around the national average so I wouldn't have thought that would be a problem. Any suggestions?!
Thanks

They all have different criteria so, regardless of a good credit score, you can still be turned down.
It would seem unusual though if you have a good credit score and have not had many recent searches etc.
I would double check your credit report and check some of the others also. Clearscore and Noddle do it for free so you can see if they are giving comparative scores.0 -
Ignore your scores entirely. It's not uncommon for bankrupts to have a 999 score, as do most people on their 18th birthday. Unfortunately, no one is keen to lend to them either.
What does your credit history say? What credit have you had, balances, limits, payment history, electoral roll, financial associates and so on.0 -
They are very poor provider (Bank of Ireland UK) so you've probably had a lucky escape.
BTW They also provide AA cards so avoid them too. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thank you to all who responded. There is nothing that looks contentious on my credit report and the only recent searches were by AA Corporation and Bank of Ireland which I didn't understand but do now! I did have an AA credit card but it was taken over about a year ago by MBNA. I haven't used it for a while but it has a limit of about £13k. I wonder if that is what went against me? The only reason I applied for a Post Office card is that they have a good deal at the moment. Maybe they think one card is enough!0

It's not that they think one card is enough. Many people have several. It's about affordability.
If your income is around the national average, a 13k limit (plus anything else you may have) is likely to severely restrict the chances of further credit.0 -
I wasn't talking about getting a card - should you have any issues (be they at application or servicing stage) then BOI are very poor. I am sure there are many people who make no use of their customer services and are fine.I had no problems getting an AA credit card.. Accepted online card arrived quickly and got a good limit,This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Disagree about BOI being poor providers, I have had a PO credit card for 12 years, I only use it abroad and get an excellent exchange rate. Customer service is efficient and uk-based. Never had a moment's problem.0

I have just had an application immediately declined by the Post Office. I recently obtained an AA credit card and it appears that Bank of Ireland are only interested in providing one credit card per customer? My recent Experian report was faultless so I don't appreciate BOI telling me to check it. I suspect that because I recently applied for the AA card with them they have declined my application for the Post Office card.0

Maybe that's why I was declined, because I already have an AA card (although taken over by MBNA) with quite a high limit that I haven't used it for a while. But then why would they get an Experian check if I was declined on the basis of information that they already have? Like 1961templar, I was a little miffed that they told me to check my Experian report but then said I was declined as I didn't meet their 'other criteria'. Why can't they just say exactly why someone is declined?0
