Hi

I know places like cnet used to be suggested for safe sites to download things from in the past.

Is this still the case? I am looking to install the Chrome browser.

I'm also looking to create a gmail account.

I would appreciate any current do's and don'ts that may be applicable to both.

Many thanks in advance :)

Use the web site of the provider , i.e. use google.co.uk/google.com. AFAIK CnET can deliver pups as do many sites.

It's always better to go to the software provider's site, if it's a programme you trust.

 Hello DCM, long time no chat, thank you for remembering me, ha ha! Hope you are keeping well - just seen your old signature has gone, shame. I might have known you would come to my rescue, as ever :)

Don't get on to this board as much these days but recognise a few regulars still around, thankfully. What happened to aliEnrik?

I thought he would come back for the launch of independence day (the movie) but I would imagine like the rest of us he may be disillusioned by the way the forum has morphed

Ah, okay. Shame, he was another one on this board that helped a lot of non-techies like me.

Take care. No doubt I'll be popping in from time to time to ask my idiot questions, ha ha! And yes, it is not the same as it used to be :(

Chrome is made by Google. Why would anyone even consider not getting it from the source - Google?

Oops sorry, I should have clarified it better - I was just asking in general whether people still used places like cnet, filehippo etc.

They are both reasonable sources if the software concerned has no dedicated download site. You do need to be wary of what boxes are ticked and not ticked to avoid installing unwanted stuff too. Best bet is to go into the windows uninstall dialogue straight after and by sorting on install date check that nothing else was slipped in unannounced.

I've always found File Hippo to be the easiest download site to use with the least amount (if any) of rubbish added in.
