Am i entitled to my money back?

This Saturday (15th July) will be my sister-in-laws hen do. I, along with the other bridesmaids etc Started paying for the entire days worth of activities nearly 3 months ago. Making final payments well over a month ago.
One of the activities is 'It's a Knock Out' near Brighton which involves jumping around in and on inflatable objects etc. Since full payment was made I've discovered i'm pregnant. I figured i might be able to participate in some aspects of the event so wasn't too troubled about losing money. Since then i have investigated and found that i will be unable to participate in any of it. I also found that the company allows spectators at no extra cost.
I have contacted the company today to advise i'm pregnant and unable to participate and they have refused to give my money back as it is less than 28 days before the event. It's not clear in their T's&C's that this is their policy, let alone for legitimate reasons.
I would like to know if i stand any chance of getting my money back and if so how i should go about it.
Any advice is greatly appreciated! :j

Probably unlikely as youve let them know a mere 4 days before the event. You are the one who has broken the contract. They are unlikely to be able to sell another space on the events (however they run it) in 4 days time. They may have also given some sort of 'bulk group' discount.

How long since discovering you were pregnant and actually discovering nothing was available to you?

Wait... are you somehow suggesting that the company take some responsibility for your situation?

Your "legitimate reason" is really no more compelling than if you'd broken a limb etc. It's hardly the fault of this company that your personal circumstances have changed.

Just accept that it's too late to cancel and enjoy the day as a spectator...

Can you bring a friend in to take your place?

I don't think the inflatable company get you pregnant so it's not really their fault. I don't think inflatables do that but I could be wrong, unless I've been that bit wrong.

I can't believe I've read this. The things people post about to try and somehow legally get out of things.

Op, this is not the companies fault it's yours!!
  • Wow... at no point did i say the company was responsible for my pregnancy. In fact I've been trying a long time to get pregnant. It is not clear on their terms and conditions that they will offer you NO money back after 28 days. I meant that i had a legitimate reason to cancel rather than i just didn't feel like attending. Thanks to those of you that actually offered helpful advice.

That's sort of the point though, "legitimate reason" for who. Your reasons for cancelling (valid or not) are nothing to do with the event organiser who are there to provide a service in exchange for an income, why should they lose out.

It doesn't need to be on their terms and conditions, though.
Legally, they are not required to refund you no matter how "legitimate" you may feel the reason is. It would be the same if you had bought tickets to a show which you could not attend, there would be no refund.

Put yourself in the shoes of the business owner. You run a business which necessitates customers pre-booking so that you can plan ahead and basically make an honest profit. If you then have people suddenly cancelling and being refunded then not only are you inconvenienced, your profit is compromised.

While there were some who answered your query flippantly, all the responses basically say the same thing.

You left it too late to cancel. Your reasons are irrelevant.

You would also have a 'legitimate reason' to cancel if you had been convicted of some crime and locked up in jail.

Do you think that you should get a refund in that situation too?

In these cases the company are still willing to provide the service but you are now unwilling to fulfil your part of the bargain.

So being unable to participate due to being pregnant was hardly an unforeseeable event, unlike, say, tripping over the cat and breaking your leg.
