How can I remove a false default please?

Last year I took out a mobile phone contract on ID network at Carphone Warehouse. I took the mobile phone home, ID network had no signal coverage in my area. I returned the mobile phone on the same day and they said they would end the contract, disconnect it. That was the end of that, or so I thought.

Now a default has appeared of my credit score due to being seriously in arrears with Carphone Warehouse - ID. On digging the serious arrears is... £4!! How or where this £4 has come from I don't know? And the default, well...

Carphone Warehouse have been unhelpful and I can't get through to ID unless I enter a valid ID mobile number.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction for raising a dispute/getting this default somehow removed?

    Hi Joders,

If you signed the contract at Carphone Warehouse I would suggest you make a written formal complaint to them and ask them to correct this information on your credit file and write off the £4 'arrears'. If they refuse to do this then you can escalate your complaint. They are not covered by the Telecoms Ombudsman or CISAS because the issue is with the retailer and not the network provider. Therefore you could speak to Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline 0345 404 0506 or possibly the Financial Ombudsman Service.

If it is confirmed that the £4 is not owed you should be able to get this removed. However, if it is concluded through complaints that it is owed (for some reason) then it would likely remaining on your file for 6 years I am afraid. Good luck,

  • I've actually got something similar that I'm dealing with at the moment. I had a contract directly with O2, which I cancelled and changed over via a 3rd party to another better contract, still using O2 as the network provider. I have done everything correctly and paid everything I owed. I then checked my credit file a few months later to find a default on there from O2, saying that I owed them money. I rang them, must have been on the phone for at least an hour as they couldn't find my old account info, finally they found it and said that I owed them money. I explained that I hadn't received anything from them to tell me of this? Nothing at all! No email, no call, no text and no letter so how on earth would I know that I owed it? I have asked them to remove it from my account, as I paid it on the phone that day. They have written to the credit file people to ask them to remove it - that was in March. I haven't heard anything since. I have now had to chase them again and am waiting for 10 days for them to reply. Meanwhile, I have a default sat on my account that was not my fault. I contacted my credit file company 'Noddle' and asked them to request for them to remove it, only to have a response saying my request had been refused.

I will have to wait for O2 to come back to me. In the event that they wont get it removed, am I able to go to the Telecoms Ombudsman?

Hi Sarasimpson I have found one of the best ways to get help is via the CEO's office of companies.

The Carphone warehouse CEO office details are: directoremails@cpwplc.com

    (details available online)
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
