finding out about beneifts paid 4yrs ago

Does anyone have/know a phone number / email address to find out previous benefits payments paid. I have rung this one and as the information is too old I was told to write a letter, wow old school. All i need is proof of taxable benefits. Anyway needless to say letter wrote and 2 weeks later I still haven't received any information. The taxman is getting impatient and for some reason they think I was getting benefits while I was on PAYE.
To add insult to injury they also threw in a late penalty charge.
I was told that they can only be contacted via snail mail

it does seem face to face stuff doesn't happen anymore due to government cuts.

help please

Being on PAYE wouldn't prevent your receiving benefits?

Were you receiving benefits of any kind four years ago?

If HMRC believe you received some sort of taxable benefit then they will have some idea of what benefit it was.

no not any benefits at all. even my bank account says no too, but HMRC think I got £2000. I finally got information back over three weeks after sending it, and ironically the day after I resent it under a signed for package. Even though the letter I wrote clearly stated my request of 2012/13 and 2013/14 they sent me back exactly what I was told on the phone FROM nov 2014 lol.

I asked them that exact question, what benefits, they said we don't know just you received benefits. Anyway now I got spend ages filling in paperwork as I see it someone blundered somewhere

Not necessarily. If they think you were receiving something from DWP, that's all the information they will have. It won't tell them which benefit. They should however be able to say what the source was if it was DWP.
