I know it's possible to replace the mechanical timer that's fitted to the boiler but is there a wireless thermostat/timer that can replace the mechanical one?

Nest & Hive are most often talked about. I don't have either so do your own research.0

I had a Honeywell wireless in my old place; the base wires up to the boiler as any normal thermostat would, and the wireless unit handled the rest.
No reason you shouldn't be able to put one in.0
