Saw this on the news earlier.

80 in a 30, through a red light, no licence, insurance. Posted a picture the day before of himself driving at 142mph.

    6 years, out in 3.

    Disgraceful sentence.

Heard the lad's parents on the radio. Dignified, polite - and all the more astonishing when I saw that photo. I'd have been a screaming madwoman & yet these two were able to be polite and clear. Awed.

I really hope the sentencing guidelines are shifted, as the lad who walked away shouldn't have.

Sentences for serious driving offences causing death or serious injury should include 20+ year driving bans on release with an automatic return to prison if caught driving. That would be a life changing sentence. It always seems wrong to me that idiots that drive like this can be driving again legally within a few years.

If you want to kill a total stranger, do it with a car rather than a shotgun or a knife. The courts are much more understanding.

This wasn't a moment's inattention by an otherwise safe and courteous driver (which is, in some ways, forgivable) but a sequence of reckless, criminal acts. Usually, if you kill someone in the course of a criminal act, you go down for a very long time. Six years (and out in three, less time spent on remand) is derisory and an insult to justice.

20 years minimum, plus a lifetime driving ban - enforced, as Norman Castle suggests, by a return to prison for a refresher every time he is caught with a set of car keys in his hand.

The sentence is a total travesty.

I definitely think there need to be much longer bans for the small minority who commit really unforgivable driving crimes.

People get caught drink-driving and get a year's ban for a first offence. Someone without a licence or insurance drives at double the speed limit, kills someone, and (okay, along with a prison sentence) gets just a 2 year ban.

Driving is a privilege; not a right.

Unless someone is a cold-blooded killer willing to use any murder weapon to hand, long prison sentences don't really help anyone.

The most important thing is to protect the public. People willing to take such risks behind the wheel should not be allowed to drive again.

There are many people who never drive or own cars but lead full lives. Why should someone who has proven themselves to be this clueless, reckless and irresponsible be allowed to drive again? Driving is a privilege which should be removed in cases like this. That would be a genuine deterrent. I'm sure there are reasons why prison sentences aren't as long as many people would like but an extended driving ban could easily be justified.

Why not give people like this a 20 years to life driving ban?

Driving is a conditional right, not a privilege.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

What are the conditions? Presumably to drive safely and responsibly.
