Small oak furniture shops

Bit of a long shot i think this one but i'll try it all the same.

Some companies are known for being good for the haggle. It's even listed on this website somewhere if i remember right.

Some of the small shops, there's a more personal feel & you can get some good deals with them. The place we bought our bed from (a small local bed shop) went above & beyond & we were able to come to an agreement well below the advertised price (so must be a decent mark up for them).

Just wondering what these small oak furniture shops are like for mark up if any of you have any experience with them?

There's only one here locally. The other which i think is oak furniture land is further out.

This local shop - the staff are brilliant, except i find the boss to be a bit of an, well this is a nice forum so i wont say. :)

We caught him out lying to us with a previous order. Just general attitude from him. We were in a rush back then so didn't have time for too much of a haggle & this guy most certainly wasn't for budging at all. Claimed he couldn't drop it any more than the advertised price as they were all at the lowest possible price anyway, he's practically 'giving them away'.

Yeah right, he doesn't know my boss. This guy seems to only be reciting from the book my boss wrote (if only you'd heard some of the corkers!)

I've decided i want good oak furniture throughout. I love the look & feel of it. Would you expect a small company to be able to shift much on the price or am i really being unrealistic here (i'm prepared to be told i am).

Went in to his store again today. He doesn't usually work Sunday's but there he was. I was listening to his conversation with a lady while i was waiting on him coming available. Clear to me that he didn't just talk to me off-ish as she got it too for confusing a dressing table for a computer desk (how dare she!). Thankfully the rest of his staff are excellent.

He's lied to you in the past and you don't like his attitude, yet you're still willing to go back?
  • To be honest, he has what i want. If i can get it at a price i accept then who cares if he has bad attitude. I'd rather not deal with the guy but then i'd rather not deal with some of the people i work with but i have to do it to get what i want (paid). So you just get on with it.

I've been to that oak furniture land before and 1) I didn't really fancy what they had and 2) it's more costly.

There's a place locally that does pine, but having been in & seen it, 'used' it etc, i don't know, it just doesn't feel the same.

Aside from that there's nothing else. The next place would probably be about a 45-60minute drive away which i'm not really in to just for the sake of this chap having a bit of an attitude. If i can get one of his workers then great.

He's one of those - i work 24-7, nobody works harder than me, my prices are awesome, did i tell you more about me me me me. yada yada yada.

But at the end of the day, he has some fantastic products. I spent up £1,500-£2,000 with him a couple of years ago & this shell out is coming to £1,100 before any possible haggle.

Like i say, i'm just wondering if the small time shops are known for being bad on making a deal & i'm just sat here being unrealistic on my expectations or whether this guy is just being a tightbum when he's not willing to shift any. At the end of the day i don't expect a £600 unit to go for £200, we're not dealing in rot box cars, but to drop to the £500-£550 marker would be an aim. And then the other unit at £500, looking somewhere around the £400-£450 for example.

But you struggle to get £10 out of this guy.

If that's the way all of them are then fine.

Although i should see if i can get the range online. I'll go & check.

Tell him if he takes 900-1k (whatever you prefer/think you can get away with) you'll buy it now, else you'll be visiting oak furniture land.

Are you haggling for the best price or simply unwilling to pay the current price? Offer what you are willing to pay and its up to them if they accept.
