Personally, after having an awful experience loaning a horse last year, I'd never loan again. The horse was great, unfortunately the owners criticized EVERYTHING I did (I've had horses all my life), complained that my farrier had to literally glue their horse's feet back together as they were in such bad condition, and rode the horse while I was at work! On top of that, they were charging me for livery which transpired that they were paying a much lower charge for, so not only was I paying for everything, they were creaming money off on top! Cheek of it!
I'll never loan again, I'll be looking to buy. No one to answer to, its your horse and you look after it how you see fit.0 -
I'm currently part loaning a horse or rather, have been for the last 4 years. I could afford to buy my own & pay the associated livery, etc but for me it's more about a time commitment than monetary one. I work full time and find that really, riding twice a week is enough for me. As you seem uncertain, then I would definitely go down the loan route first, and then buy if you find that you are comfortable with the costs. At least with the loan arrangements, you do not have the heartache of having to sell but usually can give 1 month's notice to exit the arrangement. See how it works out and go from there. Good luck!0
