Spaying through a charity?

Options
Morning :)

I'm looking for some advice if possible as I've looked at bills due to come out this month and I've remembered that my dog is due to be spayed on the 22nd. I've called the vets and they told me the cost would be circa £170, but I just don't have the money for it. My contract ended in April and I've been looking for a full time position ever since, whilst picking up the odd bit of temp work as much as I can. I've depleted my savings and living with next to nothing now.

I was wondering whether there were any charities that would carry out the procedure? Once I'm earning, I'd pay back the cost of the procedure in donations, I just can't afford to feed myself properly this month, let alone pay another vets bill :(

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If your getting any benefits the pdsa will help.
Otherwise speak to the dogs trust etc see if they will help

Another option is to look for vets that focus primarily on neutering, as they often offer it at a lower cost. The Easipetcare chains are an example of this, with spays from around £100-150 depending on the dog's weight.

I know they have changed policy, eg letting you claim for only one full breed (as opposed to a cross), but I don't think they do free spaying, unless it is for medical reasons , such as pyometra.

Would the vet agree to easy payments ? Ours do , if you are not a new customer.

Ours still spay, a kitten was certainly done there recently it costs a lot less than vets.
You need to take a lot of proof of benefits in tho and it is only upon receipt of certain income based benefits

Could you be very careful with her and delay having her spayed until you can afford it?

I got the porky princess done with vetuk
    They were lovely with her
It cost £105 and they did her nails, they do charge for 'add ons' though and will push them.

How old is she? Has she had a season? If so When was her season? When do you think she due again?

There isn't a precise date they have to be done on, postponing a few weeks is unlikely to make a huge amount of difference unless you are very unlucky and she either comes into season (usually aim for middle of the 6month gap between seasons) or a pyometra has been developing (tend to be middle aged).

    I wouldn't postpone long though.
  • Depending on her breed & where you live, dogs trust do often offer free or heavily discounted neutering for those on a means tested benefit.

Otherwise I'd wait until after her next season. Whilst I'm very pro neutering, delaying it for a few months is probably not the worst thing ever.

You don't say where you live.

Blue Cross hospitals -3 in London & 1 in Grimsby treat pets at reduced rates for those on benefits or low waged. Guess that includes spaying,

Certain postcodes used to give reduced rates- think that was sponsored by Dogs Trust &/or PDSA- where the stray dog population was high.

I've never had an unneutered dog male or female and if they are not already done when I adopt them I would certainly get it done but some dogs are done way too early and can cause future problems. Personally I wouldn't get any dog done before six months and for larger breeds would wait until at least 18 months to allow them to fully mature before doing it.

Cancelling the appointment may be for the best for now and get her done a little later when you can afford it. As long as you are careful when she comes into season she will be fine.
