£350-odd got me an i5-based fanless system with 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD. It's wonderful!

That said, I was thinking you could just replace the hard drive for now

I'd buy new in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

I have 4 hdd's in the PC, don't know how I ended up with four but I did and they all serve a different purpose. So the Windows drive never has anything besides Windows on. Thankfully I backed everything up a few days ago too. I've swiped the HD from an old sky box so will throw that in now and see if it works.

Least then I know if it's the HD or something else.

Okay the HD out the sky box has formatted fine. Installing Windows now. Fingers crossed it gets me back up and running.

Things might be simpler if you disconnect all the harddrives except the one you want to install Windows on. Bearing in mind your previous problems, I'd be inclined to reconnect each drive one at a time and load Windows after connecting. If you do get an error, at least you'll have a vague idea which drive isn't playing ball.

Thanks. That's what I did do. Seems to have been the Windows drive because the drive from the sky box is in now and Windows is up and running. Touch wood everything seems okay.

Just debating wether to stay on Windows 7 or update back to 10.

Personally I cannot see what the resistance is to W10, I like it.

How about you buy a W7 install and upgrade for free (if you're quick), then you could roll back if you really can't bear it...

    Or just learn it.

Those people on Windows 8 will be annoyed in a couple of years time when there's no more features. No doubt they'll be cursing Microsoft...

Went with Windows 10 which I had before and for some reason my display is gigantic. I can't find the correct drivers. I don't get why I didn't just download them like it did when I first upgraded to Windows ten a few months back.

Looks like I'll have to go back to Windows 7.

Windows isn't detecting the graphic card either. Just saying basic Microsoft display adaptor

Microsoft has the solution to your original error message:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/982736

All I di was copy the Error and Google it. Microsoft has lots of answers on the MS website, and that is the Horse's Mouth!
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Thanks but that wasn't the original message. The original was something to do with a dll file. Then it was a disc error. Then the above. Then several more.

I wasn't backing anything up as in the article and I couldn't get Windows to start to even attaboy the listed solution. A lot of MS 'solutions' don't take many variables into account.

And every time I tried to repair it i got stuck in a loop.
