I don't really know the answer to leaking vacuum packed bags but the only thing I can think of is that perhaps there was a teeny tiny unsealed bit of the seam made by the heat sealer and air has leached in very slowly until the bag is full of air.
  • While we're on the subject of Survival Tins, check out this tiny torch (alongside a penny for size comparison), I keep in mine.

    Dimensions are:-

    Length - 53 mm

    Diameter - 10 mm

Weight (with batteries) - 7 grams.

The only down side is, it only stays lit so long as the button is pressed.

Apparently rural spots are becoming increasing popular with criminals, especially for things like ATM robberies. There may be no local police station - at best a part time one. By the time police get to the spot, it's all over.

I'm very rural, and we have had episodes of quad bikes, sheep and heating oil being taken. On the farms and one instance right here in the village. The village being 3 very short streets and only about 2 doz houses in all. Two years ago all our sheds were broken into in my street - a row of 10 houses in all, backed by fields. Only one street light out front. Very annoying to think that people are creeping around in your back garden in the dark!
  • I live on a modern housing estate right on the edge of town and there are around 500 houses. We are regularly being targeted by casual thieves who have equipment to open cars without keys and then they take anything in them. A lot of people have cameras and can catch images of them actually doing this but insufficient for police action, indeed it's nigh on impossible to even contact police these days, so harsh are the cuts. A lot of us have had the brush inserts of the letter boxes removed and this is so that thieves can use telescopic devices to pick up keys and wallets left in the hall. It is really nuisance crime but makes everyone feel uncomfortable in their own home at night.

  • As a glasses wearer, it vaguely occurred to me that a backup pair rather than the old pair might be a good idea. (I then found it to be a legal requirement for driving in Spain.) Since I migrated to driving & reading glasses, I went for the easy option & bought some cheap generic reading glasses - and my word you are at risk of getting what you pay for. I bought very cheap & I will definitely be buying twice...
Still the cheapies may have a future life fire-lighting with Scouts.

Living proof - that sounds horrible. Telescopic opportunist thievery is tough to fight.

If you have a branch of Hema anywhere near you (Danish version of IKEAs market hall) their reading glasses are very good value. About £5 and they have lasted well and stood up to the wear and tear of being in my handbag every day
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • A couple of months back, there was a failed attempt to pull the cash machine out of the wall of a small market town store 2 miles away - on the main street would you believe. And yesterday the supermarket in the same town was raided.
Just like in Mum's new town recently - their little supermarket cash machine had been raided 6 months previous to the ram-raid attempt. Which is still cordoned off, rubble all over the street & pavement, corner of ATM visible, until the County Architect can tell them how to keep a 16th century building with a very large hole in upright for the next 5 centuries.

Bob - I like that torch. Any hints on where to buy one?

Mardatha/DFV - I also have an allotment shed. Not quite as well-equipped as GQ's, but I do have a few fall-back preps in there. Many of the sheds on our site have been raided, padlocks bolt-cut, brand-new expensive power tools removed, but curiously no-one yet has bothered with our ramshackle "Gumtree" freebie, without even a padlock, and apparently full of ancient hand tools acquired at vast expense (50p or less) from the Tip. I'm not completely complacent, but there's so much else to steal and we're just about the furthest from the gate...

Googled & seemingly they have a branch in Birmingham New St station? Thoughtful look at training calendar - nothing yet, but... Anyway, I'm sure I can wrangle a pretext soon. Thank you!
