Congratulations, MrsLW! It sounds wonderful :)

Mar, didn't mean to discombobulate you! It's just fruit, with a "deeper" level of flavour than sultanas and raisins and whatnot.

I've had my dehydrator going full blast :) some carrots, some blueberries, more broccoli (I've realised how important it is to get things more or less the same size, ha!). And more brambles are being cut down in their prime, also "ha"! Still not dug up the roots, but at least the roots are becoming accessible to me now.

  • I've only just discovered you can make fig jam...

Also fig wine. I've never made it, but now that I've thought about it I'll give it a try. I'll have to use dried figs though as the temperature here wouldn't support fig trees.

For me, preparedness isn't so much having a load of stuff - it's knowing how to use that stuff to it's best potential and understanding enough about it to know how it can be adapted for an alternative purpose - that goes for both 'stuff' and 'foodstuffs'

ATM my preps are learning how to use some of the foodstuff I've bought over the years - because it was interesting and/or cheap - which was dumped into the cupboards and freezers never to be seen again because I didn't actually have a 'plan' in mind for it.

For my next experiment into using alternative food stuffs, I've dug 500g of British lamb hearts - originally from Morrisons - out of the freezer and intend to cook them for me/my mother/her partner for Monday.

Never had it before so I'm searching around the internet for some ideas - Any suggestions?

I've got a remoska and instant pot so a choice between roast and casserole.

I'm contemplating cooking with onion, garlic, tomato and paprika into a kind of paprikash with rice.

Could just as easily go sliced with onion, mushroom, carrot and gravy to serve with mash.

    Or something else...

    WWYD?

That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

My Mum used to stuff the hearts and they arrived at the table looking just what they were - animals' hearts - put me off even trying them.

If they'd been sliced up and cooked with other stuff, I'd probably have enjoyed them.

I used to enjoy them stuffed with sage and onion stuffing and then casseroled. haven't had them since the 1970s.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I remember a friend of mine making "Hearts with Orange" back in the 70's and she said the family liked it. I think she got the recipe from a magazine, but I expect there's one on the internet.

What do you do with figs? What do they taste like?

Deep and rich and sweet and a little bit crunchy. Almost like very well matured dried fruit that's been macerated in something like a smoky brandy.

What I do with them is 1. Ignore the Best Before Date and 2. happily get the ones which are very soft, then 3. tear them open like a flower and stick them under the grill with some fresh goats' cheese and a drizzle of balsamic. That way you get deep and rich and tangy and creamy and sweet and sour all in one.

That's pretty much how I remember having them when my Mum did them. Sage & Onion and then gently baked under foil in a beef stock. They tasted less strong than liver (as I was but a little 'un, they'd have to be), but needed to be balanced out by potato and usually peas.

I'd probably try making it myself if I thought the OH would try it, but hearts aren't the sort of thing that turn up in the shops round here. He really likes Haggis, boiled swede and mash, though. Which I forgot to order so I could freeze it in slices for the first bout of cold weather. Bother.

I do have 24 rolls of loo roll arriving tomorrow with food for the month. There will be a lot of portioning and freezing involved, along with firing up the breadmaker again, as there's no way I will be able to handle going back to work and shopping and cooking and cleaning each day. Once it's all frozen, at least there's no excuse for me to make do with two pieces of toast and a cup of coffee when there will be veggies, meat, fish, pulses, grains and suchlike sitting in there waiting to be matched with the various herbs and spices. The cats certainly won't starve, at any rate, even if I CBA.

I'm really fed up with not getting better now. Damned vitamin D deficiency beggaring up my bones and muscles. And Himself being away indefinitely is really not appealing to me, especially when every night when he says goodnight, I can hear his voice beginning to crack.

Dammit. I really want a hug now.

    I'm going to bed.

We are off on holiday in our caravan for 2 weeks starting tomorrow and boy do we need a break ! We have also been through the wringer lately.
I shall take some food with us tea, coffee, toilet rolls etc from my stores and enough fresh food for 2 days, then pop to the new Al*is that we found last time we were there.
    Take care all.
