 Blimey, pineapple, what a thing to happen. Could have been so much worse if you'd had no fuel and no food/ cash by you.

I'm a heavy user of cash and only ever use my debit card on in-branch cash machines or paying certain utility bills online. I'm so predictable in my habits that I'm sure the fraud algos would flag up anything unusal asap.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Having been bitten to b*ggery last night, I suggest a good supply of anti-mozzie spray and anti histamine cream if this weather continues!

  • Was it those 'damsons' again Hobsons? I remember you having the damsons a few years ago but I didn't think you could get that twice, I thought after the first time you were immune? xxx.

Mrs LW: You'll have to nudge my memory re: damsons, sorry. I had a couple of bites the night before last, he enjoyed it so much I think he brought all his friends and neighbours the following night! I'm "catnip" (or what ever the equivalent is) for biting insects. Just got some more spray from Wilkos, it contains deet and is much cheaper that the "Jungle" version. I shall smell especially appealing tonight :o

  • A few years back I think it was on one of the incarnations of the tougher thread and you posted something about damsons and it got silly but funny, I don't remember what happened to cause it but we decided there had been an outbreak of the damsons and you'd caught them! made me smile seeing your name, I always think Oh yes Damsons! xxx.

Pineapple - glad you're ok and that your bank realised quickly that your account had been compromised but it's scary to realise how easy it could be to end up stuck without cash. I've been away - gorgeous week with my sis-in-law in Cumbria - and my cash reserves in the house now are very depleted. Time to visit the bank I think.

I know it's ages since I asked for advice, and I apologise to Maryb, Dawn and MrsLW because I can't remember what happened but I didn't get back quickly but I DID make the black/white/red currant cordial and it's it's delicious. I waterbathed it as well as using red hot sterilised bottles just to be on the safe side and it has a very good seal. Half's in the freezer and half's in the pantry so fingers crossed it keeps well. I used 8oz of honey instead of sugar to a pint of juice. We have an amazing honey harvest this year, despite the drought though the apple drop is phenomenal and our gooseberries and raspberries are very poor.
Daz - :Having watched half of Newsnight (stockpiling for Brexit?) I'm going to clear the pantry today and start building up my stores again. I wound everything down just before we had the house renovations done and those empty shelves are worrying me more than a little.
My state pension has come through this week - better 5 years late than never I suppose - so I'm going to use the first instalment to restock the pantry.

A tip I gleaned here and so far seems to work; try the cheap lemon cleaning wipes. I've used them a couple of times when I've gone out of the evening into the garden and been fine when usually I get bitten. Being the wipes they are easy to apply and the cheapest brand seems to work.

That said, I think I read somewhere that the wipes contain plastic so I may have to research making my own reusable wipes and experiment with citronella (or lemon balm).:)

Plus no doubt an interesting assortment of chemicals. I've heard that even baby wipes can be dodgy. Anyway something seems to have been using my skin as a smorgasbord. Hopefully not dog fleas! So I have dug out some Smidge though it is so ancient, it probably won't work

I've been posting over on the preparing for Brexit thread and we seem to have two or three other posters who come in with posts dripping derision and scorn stating the fact that we live in a 1st world country and why on earth would you prepare for anything at all ever? bizarre is how we're described and we're told it's not as though we're at war is it?

Well on reflection I see they and possibly the rest of the 'normal' people in the world as we know it regard us as idiots and there may or may not be some truth in that BUT if there isn't any kind of problem ever in my lifetime that justifies prepping for anything at all that may happen well, I'll have my supplies and I take care not to stock anything that we won't use on a day to day basis anyway and I'll use up what is a good well stocked pantry so nothing will go to waste, in fact it's an investment in a world where prices constantly edge upwards. If however we ever do have a change in that nicely ordered existence where everything is freely available in the 1st world country we inhabit and things are not running smoothly or for one reason or another not available at all and that could be anything from Brexit to crop failure anywhere on the planet, from fuel shortages , to power outages to extremes of weather.....well them I will be the idiot who will stay indoors, be warm, fed and comfortable.....but what would I know? I'm an idiot!!!

I'm fully expecting one of them at least to follow over here chums, I've been told it's a pattern of behaviour from different incarnations of this user over the years to latch on to someone and then try to make trouble by ridiculing every post posted by them. I've seen this person newly on one of my regular threads so I'm inclined to think there is some credence to the warning I was given. I won't be reading anything posted by this user so if I see any posts it will be because someone has quoted from it. There can be no satisfaction in baiting me because I WILL NOT play!
