Like Kittie I rely on my late OH to point me in the right direction for lost/mislaid things. When am getting too frustrated I just ask 'oh ....please show me where it is' and he does! And yes, it is usually somewhere I've already looked umpteen times. I can always hear him chuckling at me.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0

My lovely OH can never find anything now, so I'd be astonished if he could do any better once I was here on my own0

In this heat I've just been for a walk down to the river and back home via the footpaths and lanes and I'm melting or rather I was until I remembered I had a hand held fan which I've found and am plying to some effect to cool down. In a hot season without power something as simple as a hand held fan might make the difference between suffering or coping? Not an electric/battery one but one that is powered by me!0

Fans are or have been parts of lots of cultures and not limited to accessories for ladies of certain classes to flirt with at assembly rooms. A simple and (imo) comely accessory long overdue for a comback.]
I have now moved into my new computer inc a new operating system, gone from XP to Win10 in one leap. Gulp. I've had a bit of a week (more truthfully, a bit of a ten days) with tech, including buying and learning to use a smartphone and deciding really I don't like them and agreeing to sell it to a pal for what I paid for it. I shall be going back to a dumbphone asap.
Rightly, just going to pedal part of the defunct pooter's peripherals up to the dump. It will take several trips to get it all outta here, so better get started.]
Oh, and weather-wise, I keep my windows open and my curtains drawn in the heat and it's keeping my teeny-tiny flat very cool.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

GQ, thats great to see you back! I hear you with a smartphone, though truthfully, its useful to me to have a small allowance - I use trains quite a bit more than you do, I think, and a smartphone is a really useful thing to have.
XP to Win10 is a huge leap, be kind to yourself!2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

I guess if one needs internet access on the hoof, such as whiling away long journeys, a smartphone is a boon. For me, with my particular lifestyle, it's irrelevant. I seldom travel unless by bike or, like I did on holiday in June, driving a hire car.
My landline provides the lion's share of my phone needs, I just like a small phone with a long battery life to live in my pocket and be available for the odd emergency or sending silly little texts to pals to arrange social life.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I carry a folding paper job (from the Chinese supermarket) as personal air con - works no matter what the electricity status is. That it is secured within the handle in transit gives it an unmatched rigidity & security whilst being lugged from point to point.
Quite how the flirting bit works I've no idea, but sadly that phrase holds with or without a fan. That it should make a come-back I absolutely agree with - the baffled looks are getting me down!
All the very best of luck with Win 10 & if you didn't get on with the smartphone, worry not. Other tech is available & the Canadians remain fondly appreciative of carrier pigeons, not least as they let one go with the message and ate the others.0 -

Oh Lordy the end of the world really IS nigh! not only do we have a lettuce shortage which means they are having to fly them here from the USA but today I read there is likely to be a CRISP shortage because of both the Beast from the East earlier in the year and the fact that apparently potatoes stop growing when the temperature reaches 25 degrees. Well I learn something new every day and in the 70 years I've inhabited this planet and in the 50 years that I've been growing spuds I've never had that happen but that's not to say it might not be a reality now. Potatoes perhaps have become delicate little flowers that need expert nurturing and tender care to come to fruition.....OR it might just be that the crisp manufacturers are looking at a wonderful opportunity to increase their prices in the shops??? call me cynical but I can't help that thought having crossed the poor hard working brain cell this morning.....0

MrsLW - We have 24 beautiful butterhead lettice all unfortunately all ready for harvesting immediately. (2013 F1 hybrid seed and we weren't expecting such good germination or we'd have staggered planting)I was thinking 'lettuce, pea and mint' soup which is pleasant iced but maybe I could set up a stall outside the house and make a killing :rotfl:
Our potatoes are all good too despite the lack of rain here. No rain in 7 weeks now and a hosepipe ban, but we have a LOT of water barrels and watering cans. It is true that potatoes stop growing in certain temperatures, but they start again when the temperatures change so I think that the crisp manufacturers are having a laugh - at our expense. A dyed in the wool cynic here!!0
