I have just seen a bungalow on RM, below budget, not too far from here, needs updating but has 1/3 of an acre of flat grass. Talk about timing, having read the above posts and taking sense on board, I am not going to view. I could cope with 1/3 acre now but have to come to terms that slowing down is part of the physical aging process. I have to thank mona for this, helping me to keep an open mind and to be realistic0

hello people quick question found about 7 jars of beetroot that said best before sept 2017 will they be ok , i think they will but will defer to your collective experience thank you take care
I make my own pickles, jam etc, and none of it it ever has a best before / use by datethough I do write on the label the date it was made. At least 99 times out of a hundred, it keeps for years, but if it has spoiled, it is quite obvious from the appearance, smell etc when I open the jar. I opened a jar of chutney from 2014 the other day, and it is fine
I note that the date you refer to is 'best before' in any case, as opposed to 'use by'. This implies that there may be some loss of quality, but not dangerous to eat. See https://www.food.gov.uk/science/microbiology/use-by-and-best-before-dates0 -

I am so relieved and I too thank monna for this. Being sensible doesn't have to be a depressing thing I don't think. There's a beauty to be found in making any space a nice space. My back yard is teeny, my allotment is smaller than most, my front garden is postage stamp but at this moment in time I'm kind of glad. They're my spaces and I appreciate every square inch... I dunno if I would have the capacity to appreciate 1/3 of an acre without it becoming a bind.

DAZ I opened a jar of home made jam from 2008 the other day, it had somehow shuffled to the back of a shelf and it was as good as the day I made it, we're still here so I think your beetroot will be fine!0

There is another way to look at that.
That being - if you like the bungalow and its location per se - then you could have a large chunk of that garden turned over into being a "forest garden" (which wouldnt take much maintenance at all) and/or do a gardenshare arrangement with a younger person nearby that was desperate for the use of a reasonable size garden and couldn't afford it. With the gardenshare arrangement - then you'd both share the "proceeds" (ie the food).
It could work out well if you found someone that you liked enough to be friendly with too.
Personally - my view is that I'm constantly surprised by how many people in this country say "WHEN I'm older and less able to do things.....". At which point I mentally change the word "when" to "if" every time. It's not a 'given' that "with age comes infirmity". It ain't necessarily so.....
All too aware at the moment that slight stiffening-up/weakness of muscles had started to creep up on me personally whilst my "eye was off the ball" (ie renovating this house, etc) and determined to "get back to normal". So, for a start-off, trying to make sure I do a reasonable amount of exercise daily. Feeling the better for it already - think the strength and flexibility is starting to come back to normal.
Yep...I'm promising myself some nice new clothes when I "get back to normal". Goodness knows - I could do with some....0 -
Evening all. I'm sure most of you remember when cleaning materials came in cardboard:
eg: Flash powder, Vim, washing powder etc.
I can't even find a non smelly washing powder for wool items. Seems everything is stubbornly liquid and comes in plastic bottles. Any thoughts?
Hi jk0, there's one called Surcare which might do (I know it's sold in Sainsbury's, so probably other supermarkets too), and one of my friends used to use a brand called Filetti for her baby's washing as he was prone to eczema. I wasn't sure if it was still available but if you Google it does seem to be.

Yeah Bob. I'm medicated at the moment but usually my morning readings start to increase as the day goes on and peaks lunch time, dropping again as I chill out of an evening. When I was testing mine Bob, the morning readings were low and the rest of the time they were high.
These are my readings over the last fortnight.
Oddly, they are noticeably lower than the readings before I had Gastroenteritis, even though I stopped taking the BP medicine during my stay, and have been told by my GP to stay off them for the time being :huh:My pulse is always over 100 in the mornings, no wonder I feel wobbly.
A resting pulse of over 100 is tachycardic.0 -

People are always happiest when they accept life as it is ie WHEN we get older and not if. Living in the moment with an eye to the future is key to being happy and coping
We can live as healthily as we can, exercise as much as we can but there is no holding back wear and tear, past history and environmental factors. eg break a bone in the past and we all know that arthritis can set in. Run too much and knees and hips can get dodgy. I used my fingers a lot, crafting and now it is becoming harder to open a screw top
I don`t intend ever to co-share my garden, my garden might end up smaller but will always be my own sanctuary. I can buy good organic veg wrapped in card and paper and have it delivered to my door. I do not need a big garden and why should I pay that huge extra amount for 1/3 acre ie 365 compared to 315 when 315 bungalow is the same size has a big enough garden and is in a better location and also needs updating. I don`t have mug written on my face but tell that to the estate agents who only see this little granny
Downside to 315 is the amount of updating and it is too much on the edge ie potentially not as secure as it would be more central. I am still astute, as much as everand I don`t want to live in granny land, I would like to live in a mix
