Everything off or closed up here. No buses after 4pm today, lots of roads closed, daughter went into Galashiels and everything was shutting down even Asda and Tesco and the banks. We've had nonstop snow since just after 1pm.
I missed what fuddle said about thundersnow but believe me it's the biggest bang you will ever hear that isn't a bomb. What a bloody horrible scary noise it is. We jsut had some lightning thank god no thunder.0 -
maryb the BBC don't use Met Office anymore, they now use MeteoGroup. I wonder if it's down to cost.0

If I was having to evacuate I'd be in all sorts of problems so I think at the very least sunglasses to shield, even swimming goggles to keep the wind off as my eyes are so sore now and I just couldn't see where I was going. When the wind was on my back it was fine, but walking into it was horrid!DigForVictory wrote: »karmacat - loads of layers, none of which need be waterproof, hat and at least two pairs of socks. Snow rapidly deepening towards 7 inches out there. Today, and even late last night, the city was extremely quiet, both due to the deadening effect of so much snow and the very few cars venturing out. We joked that it's post-apocalyptical.
Funny how one is used to a level of background noise, so used to it that it is only remarkable in its abscence.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I was just standing in the kitchen at the back door. Full bright moon shining on snowy hills, total absolute silence. Was magic, I could have stood there for hours.0

Just heard on Radio 4 that British Gas (are they still called that?) have issued a gas deficit warning for today i.e. they haven't got enough for predicted use today:eek:
Apparently, they will ask industrial users to cut back first so that domestic customers will have enough.

Well, we actually do have some snow! Not a vast amount, but enough that the garden's a pretty picture-book white. More forecast... I have no need to go out in it except to the log store & to keep an eye on the bantams, who have decided that trying to fly is sooo yesterday, and are trying out figure-skating on the pond instead...
Can I remind everyone to put out some food and water for the wild birds? This weather's a killer for them & just taking a moment to spare a few crumbs will literally make the difference between life & death for some. Which will mean fewer greenfly in a few weeks' time...Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Plenty of snow here in Tameside, Greater Manchester: it’s also swirling down as I type and the east wind isn’t helping. Most of the Tameside schools are now closed which must make life even more difficult for working parents but needs must I suppose. Pleased that we have an open fire still as our ch and main fires are all gas. Also pleased that we are preppers and so far ok for essentials. Am very grateful that we have a warm house and food to put on the table, my thoughts are with the less fortunate, my sister and my brother in Lincolnshire are completely snowed in. I filled the bird feeders yesterday and they’re empty again, time to don waterproofs and refill them I think,0
