My Glastonbury experience is that wheelbarrows are less suitable than fishing trolleys or porters / sack trolleys with big sturdy wheels. Or a small four wheeled truck

    A bit Like these

    http://www.glastonburylineup.co.uk/php/shop/rucksacks.php

    (Scroll down)

These trolleys are used to transport tents, camping equipment and copious crates of beer over rough terrain, often in deep cloying mud. People do take wheelbarrows but they don't hold as much as some of those trolleys and are much more unwieldly. The route to campsites is often littered with unsuitable trolleys that have collapsed under huge weights. Most are flimsy with tiny wheels. The four wheeled trucks are excellent for transporting small children. Some have covers /roofs ( bit like covered wagons)

We have a company car that is changed every four years, we have no choice in when it's changed. I think four years is quite a long time for a lease car.., we'd happily keep them longer.

Our own car is 16 years old. We bought it second hand at 6 months old. Friends take the mick cos its quite shabby now. But both kids are new drivers so are bound to prang it beyond economic repair at some point. DD has had a minor scrape already. We've decided we may as well run it into the ground before buying a new secondhand one...
I wanna be in the room where it happens

We should be prepping for the govt swooping like a flock of vultures on to diesel car drivers.

We got rid of the diesel car two years ago because we thought it all through and guessed there would be enough evidence to condemn that type of car and make it expensive if not impossible to run. The trouble with modern science is that it is so emphatic when something new is discovered that whatever it is IS the best thing you can do/get/buy for the planet and humanity or your health. Trouble with that is 5 years down the line (or the next week with most health discoveries) you are told that whatever it is IS very bad for everything or that red wine will give you a heart attack one week followed by another study the next to be published that says you'll die of a heart attack IF you don't drink red wine!

The cynic in ME says what a very convincing way to make us into even bigger consumers than we already are!!!

The wheelbarrow 'thing' was a joke! the very last thing we'd all be worrying about during and after any disaster that called for whatever prepping we've got in place would be how much our car insurance cost and how often we changed cars!

    <ponders trying to hitch a wheelbarrow to a TWOC'ed pony>
If I'm bugging, there will be sons around. So two packs will contain food & and a (er, green, chosen to be visually unobstrusive) tent, while the other three have other stuff. (Ick, divvying that around will be a chore but if we keep the food & health going, they're more likely to stick with us.)
Or if it's a real mess & I'm bugging solo (Ulp!), I like the fishing trolley. Seen a couple of setups at carboots & ma foi did the previous owners prize Comfort.
Still, if I must go solo, I'd rather TWOC company as I can cover greater distances & I've a water test. (Horses just will not drink contaminated water if they can avoid it.)

What's the betting in another five years, they find some nasty chemical in petrol that is even worse than diesel?

(Anyone see the news about woodburners recently?) :)

It's awkward if you need to drive an automatic, as OH does. most automatic models are only available with diesel engines.

Until I sold it a couple of months ago I had an automatic Vauxhall Corsa that ran on petrol, so they are around :)

Good thing I've just changed to a petrol car. :)
  • After peak oil we won't have to worry about what fuels our cars use will we? D for V has the right of it in that if you really want to prep for that then learn horses and learn how to drive a carriage and make sure the horse you TWOC is one that has been carriage broken or you'll be in all sorts of trouble! alternatively learn how to tack up something sturdy enough to be used as a pack pony and walk beside it, simples?
