Lol jk0, we had a Reliant when the kids were wee, went all over Scotland in it until it went on fire in the middle of Rannoch Moor
We have a car as well, the bike was just for summertime fun. But he is 71 this year so if he feels its time to stop then that's up to him.
I wouldn't get rid of my coal greenbee - but I would get rid of this huge stove and go back to an old style open fire. That's my planB.0 -
Fuddle I think you can get ash can carriers on ebay, I'm looking today. If it had a better handle it would be easier- this one is like a very big grill pan but filled with heavy hot ash.
Karmacat he's fine today but very sore and I'm not helping by calling him long john silver and asking where's the parrot.0 -
If the ash was cold , couldn't it be sucked up with a vacuum cleaner? or is that a completely naive comment ? LOL
OH's Mbike is a heavy thing too I think he would struggle to lift it if it fell.0 -
The ash is always hot cos the stove is always on culpepper. When he fell, two guys came running over and they struggled to lift it between them. It's a Bandit. Anyway he's going to live, I think, and we are fine. TY everybody xxx0

How about an ash pan with one of those covers with handles. Have two so you can just take hot ash outside and let it cool, dealing with it when it's cool being easier, then adding the already clean ash pan for the day and rotate. Ok, I'm shushed.0

What my mum used to do when my dad was away, Mar, was to empty the ash pan more regularly. That way it wasn't so full of hot ashes each time. The handles are usually rubbish. we also got a covered ash bin so it could be right by the stove so the hot ashes didn't have to be moved far - it had a stand so you could set it up at the right angle to tip them in and then shut it and carry it out of the room. But you do need to make sure you get a good quality one, otherwise they burn through very quickly with solid fuel ash as it's VERY hot!0

mar, think of only one problem to solve at a time and just now, it seems to be the ash can. Your fire is on constantly so the can will always be hot. It needs to be emptied but needs to be lighter and the fire needs something in front of it that is safe if ash falls or if that can needs to be put down. A covered ash can carrier sounds as though it would be an answer, we used to have one in another house but as your fire is always on, I think you would need two. The ash tray used to slide in and it was a safe way of carrying ashes. You will need a soft kneeler to keep the knees safe too

I know this is the prepping thread and involves forward planning but the kon marie thread is where I got the incentive to thin down my home and belongings in order to cope with the future, cos we are all getting older and things happen
A big hello to all my lovely friends, I haven`t forgotten you, just been a bit pre-occupied and also trying to avoid square eyes0 -
Brilliant - thanks everybody that is what we need.0

I've got one of these, although we keep it outside because we let the stove burn out overnight so we don't have the problem of dealing with very hot ashes-I can carry the ash can like a tray. But the ashes are still warm so this is useful for storing them safely while they finish cooling.
They get very heavy very quickly so don't let it get more than half full before sending the ashes to their final destination be that the bin or the compost heapIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
