I'm just reading my manual for my new washing machine and recoil in horror at the warning that I shouldn't touch it in bare feet and wet hands. Ok, so I know the logic behind it and have actually had an electric shock in a rental that didn't have an earth by touching my kettle with wet hands but a bit shocked to read that in a manual.

I had my earth tested yesterday so no real need for paranoia but Lyn? Lambland slippers do they have a rubber sole?! :rotfl:

I have to say that living in a village my bus pass is invaluable. However, I do wonder how the bus company keeps going. I don't use the bus more than once or twice a month but if I need to get to the bank, doctor, or to the ferry I have no choice. It amazes me that I very seldom see anyone actually paying a fare, most people seem to have a pass of some sort.

Certainly I would have no objection to paying a reduced fare but would have great difficulty in paying the sort of fares that are asked for these days.

I don't feel guilty about the concessions I now get. When I was in the sixth form at school I took a Saturday job in order to pay my fares to school. My brother did the same. My parents were struggling to keep us at school and college until we were 21, we both tried to help out as much as possible. As a family we were incredibly proud of being self sufficient and as far as I am aware we were never a drain on any services so I will use my bus pass carefully and offer a little prayer of thanks for my free TV licence, but no guilt whatsoever.

  • FUDS have just checked the Lambland site and sadly the hard soles are made from PVC not rubber. You could always do the wash in WELLINGTONS if you can find some real rubber ones or possibly adapt a couple of real rubber hot water bottles to indoor footwear.....your challenge for today if you care to accept it??? xxx.

So funny. I tell you, the fumes that are coming from my kitchen from my joiner I am sure I could lay me hands on a suitable adhesive fit for the job!

    I wasn't meaning to moan - we're ok. But thanks :)
Our bus was half-hourly and is now cut to hourly. The nearest shop is in the village 11 miles down the road. I hope online shopping deliveries carry on forever as well, they make life much easier for me. I use my bus pass maybe half a dozen times a year, in summer only.
  • Well, I've just made the Rhubarb Savoury Spread I found a recipe for yesterday and it's surprisingly nice! It's very straightforward you just dice a rasher of bacon (I used a middle cut rasher from a pack of 60p Cooking Bacon) and dry fry it in a pan until it's brown but not crisp then add in 1 diced onion (red is the original recipe but I only had white so used that) and a couple of finely sliced sticks of rhubarb and cook it for around 10 minutes until the rhubarb is completely soft and breaks down and the onion is soft and cooked through. Add in salt and pepper to your taste along with a pinch of cayenne pepper, a pinch of dry mustard powder and a shake of ground ginger. We tried it hot on a cracker, very nice and I'm letting the rest cool off to see how it is when it's cold. It's a bit of a revelation as rhubarb isn't usually served in a savoury way here in the UK but I'll definitely make it again. The rhubarb Hummus will be made another day and I'll let you know how that is too. If you're feeling adventurous this might come as a nice surprise to your taste buds.

    Try these Lyn:

    Beetroot & rhubarb salad
    with lentils as a curry
    with goats cheese and peppers

    lots more out there...

    ooh.... and this :D

    I need rhubarb...
  • I experimented this evening and made some rhubarb with spices as a side veg with supper, it turned out pretty well and is something I'll make again. I sliced the stalks into centimeter pieces and oil sprayed the frying pan and gently sauted them until they started to soften then added in black pepper, onion salt, paprika, mustard powder and cayenne with a tiny sprinkle of stevia then popped on a lid and let it gently cook for around 10 minutes. Not bad at all!!!
