:) Travel with a krugerrand. Can be converted the world over into the local fiat currency.

In a totally cashless society, there won't be any local fiat currencies, which will also mean, ultimately, no Krugerrands either.

:) Someone's gonna have to get busy rounding up several million of them. Of course, you could always swop one for something - cheap secondhand car, last seat on the last plane out of a war zone.

They don't disappear in an EMP, either, which may be relevant if we ever have another Carrington Event.

With my luck one Krug would get me Either camel riding lessons Or one camel. Still I'd be buying from Chard or one of their sites - not the Royal Mint.
    Once bitten & all that!

Oh yes & wear it either in a location where airport scanners will accept a metal beep, or wear weighted skirts & know which is the important bit of hem...

Bless you GQ for tickling my curiosity - I have now read up on what a Carrington Event is & it's riveting!

:) I didn't know the Royal Mint even sold krugerrands, thought that was the Sewth Efrickan Mint (I like to tease about the accent, I have a few sewth efricken pals, good people all. Bat**it crazy but good) . There's 50 million ounces of gold in krugerrand form loose in the world, btw, so rounding them all up for the post-fiat post-bullion world will take a fair amount of time and some very strong trucks.

I hate the idea of a cashless society - if the power goes off, you've got squat.

Sorry mard, when I need to TWOC a horse, I'll be using a length of old skipping rope. (I'm too short to try that on a camel.)
Apologies for overloading the weirdometer (the US Presidents job, surely?)

Think laterally pet - the skipping rope is as a leash for the camel and the sugar lumps are a treat ;)

Unless I have completely misread the situation and the skipping rope is to lose weight and get fit - sugar lumps are anybody's guess!!!

I have been thinking about getting a credit card in case of current account bank trouble and had found one I liked with my bank and realised that would not help as both would be affected in case of web problems.

Family are here tomorrow for lunch and middle dd is having a night out so staying overnight once she gets back. Lovely to have them round and quite a change from being on my own.

New Shadow Very sorry, my rant wasn't aimed at you. I hope I didn't offend because that was not my intention.

At some point would you be able to point me in the direction of reliable sources of information to learn about the possibility of buying coinage or similar?

I'm not sure how one finds a 'dealer' and how one know's what a fair price is for the item.

Plus, I'm not even entirely sure I know how much we're talking about...

This firm have supplied all mine, and are very good value & reliable:

May I suggest buying gold sovereigns rather than Krugerrands. The sovereigns do not attract capital gains tax when you sell them.

My point is, if currency ceases to exist, globally, there'll be no money to swap for the Kruggerands.
