Just catching up, after two days *solid* work on the laurel - all of which has now left my property, apart from the stuff that I'm going to burn in the little incinerator to add the ashes to the soil.

On a prepping level, thats going to add fertility, yes, its also going to give the garden crops more sunshine and more ventilation. And if I need to grow *lots* more in a hurry, then at least these basic jobs are done.

My house is a lot more open as well, we spent a long time yesterday putting things in the right bit at the recycling centre - green waste is very easy, but there are separate little bins for lightbulbs, neon lightbulbs, CDs, chemical waste, oil paint, books, electrical gizmos, metal, lots and lots.

House is now a *tip*, of course - but it will soon become much more of a prepping "engine" for me, much more relevant to my needs. I'm happy about that :):):)

Absolutely GQ, I do the same. We need to move up a gear in our thinking now to stay ahead of this lot. I think zombies would be a doddle compared to politicians. Politicians who never had to use cash but can afford anything they want- and who have accountants who can fiddle their taxes to hell and back, unlike us poor peasants.
Maryb I don't think any jobs are safe now, civil service included. Cuts cuts and more cuts, and all made by eejits who are just out of school and anxious to please the boss and be noticed. They don't think of consequences of the cuts, just sit at a desk with a wee pencil and tick boxes then go to lunch.
Trying to think what we could use as barter if we had no money and say the washing machine died.. I can hardly go into JL and offer to knit the salesman some socks in exchange... do him a tarot read maybe? :rotfl:

Digforvictory To get out of Manchester centre quickly and safely I'd head for the canals. They got us home in 1996 when the Arndale bomb exploded. Do you live locally? I'm seven miles away if you fancy a Northern Meet? (Sorry, I know this is the wrong thread).

If you do, drop me a line (if it's open to all) and I'll pop up to visit dad (Knutsford) for the weekend. :D
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Would be interesting to see any further thoughts re any Welsh take on things.

Always happy to !!!!! about the bosses, but your request is a little general and I'm not sure how interested anyone else on the thread would be?

Oh, and it's not businesses (at least not medium to large businesses) that object to the push to promote the language - they get access to grants.

It's the large number of Welsh people that don't speak Welsh and feel like second class citizens CJ's going to have to watch out for.

I forgot about commenting on this, the cashless thing :o

Yep, I saw that article, and thought immediately of this thread.

You know, now that my tax is done, and the laurel is all cut down, I was going to take the next couple of months off - I haven't felt retired **at all** and I retired last August  But I really think I need to get things together a bit more - I've just opened the last pack of gluten free pasta  *and* the last pack of feta  and I have a thing, after stuff Martin's said over the years, about using up all my points from various schemes - £7.50 nectar, £3.50 Boots, £25 Bonus something from Eon (Iceland takes them) in case schemes go crash-boom.

Right, February will be "update the preps" month.

Got an email yesterday saying Iceland won't be accepting points (saver points? Bonus points?) from some time in Feb.

I deleted it because I don't collect any points for Iceland, but you might want to check.

  • It's of my "impossible dreams" to be able to just magic up a stash of banknotes and one of the first things I'd do would be to head into an EA with £half million in hand and say "I'll have that house there - and I'm paying cash" and basically just hand the money over the counter there and then.

MTSTM you'd have huge difficulties getting them to accept it now - I paid for my house by cheque ten years ago and caused chaos - took ages to complete as they have to investigate me for money laundering etc -they couldn't understand *how* i'd manage to save that much money! (and nowhere near £.5 mil either)

Son had a similar conversation recently in the bank - how did he manage to save so much money over a relatively short period of time? Came right out of the blue when a new staff member started - he explained he was a fisherman and then insisted on speaking to the manager, whom he knew, but surely they could have seen the money coming in each week??? Between that and hearing of two separate scams through our local bank this week, with money taken out of accounts, I don't trust any of them!!! I think if we can't store money in large quantities then we need to store goods in some way??? not sure how that would look long term though??? Going to give it some thought.

Next time the Mormons come by, greet them & get them started on food storage. Their faith reckons having 3 months food (And Water!) to hand. Frankly I can't see a family of five's water requirements being much less than at least one room, & we live in them, but I'm wondering about trying to find the sporing said to be in the back garden.

Every cash transaction over 10K has a mandatory money laundering check - which is why the high street jewellers routinely convert cash in hand wages into naff jewellery which is cashconverted back into stuff you can buy a pint with & for some reason this is called progress not out & out fraud. I suppose as the Gummint gets a cut on the VAT?

My wish would be that carrots & parsnips weren't 24 months to set seed. (Son's is that hops would propagate like nasturtiums, but we each have our gardening trials!) Away to research onions... And try to get more herbs from seed to healthy enough to give the blastedslugs trouble.

Oh Cobblers. The garlic bulbils I saved? Unlikely to produce edibles for three years! Ah well. I'm told patience is a virtue.
