Pineapple, I think I've fallen off the preppers wagon and need to get back on, and I was sober when I injured myself and have been since to be able to take painkillers. Feeling bored and sorry for myself now which is no way to be!

Think I prepped without knowing though, accidentally picked up Ibuprofen when shopping yesterday instead of usual paracetamol. Am grateful for it now.

  • Hi there - we've gotten through without power cuts, but today there is no cash to be had in the local cash machine, so happy to have my stash of cash to send the guys out to the pub for an hour out of my way. Had a trip to Glasgow and filled up my cupboards too - no home delivery here so couldn't rely on that.
I've decided that i'm sick to death of even my wee bit of consumerism here, so am going to have a no-spend unless its really essential year for 2017, save some money towards my retire early fund! 2016 has been really tough personally, and my long term focus has had to change - really hoping 2017 is better!

  • Whatever 2017 brings us on a world wide, national, regional or personal basis I think this and previous threads have raised the awareness amongst not just the people who read and post here but anyone who has worries, considers prepping the lunatic fringe even or dips just a tiny piece of a toe in to see what we're about and perhaps makes them to think that life isn't always smooth and dandy fine but contains hiccups and pits and things that come randomly out of nowhere and disrupt the everyday comfort they are used to. Even if it only makes people think and consider one tiny bit of what they would do IF.....it justifies its existence.

Hi there mila! Good to "see" you again. Hope you are okay and that you and your family had a happy Christmas :)

Hi Ivy! Christmas was wonderful!!
We have traveled the world...well at least to Pennsylvania. The youngest daughter graduated from university. Proud parents!! That now makes 5 to graduate. One is a doctor, one has two BS and an MA. Now three have BS degrees, two of which are going on for a masters.
Only one is married. The rest just go to school and work!
I told my girls to go to school and to not depend on a man for a living when they were little. They all remember me telling them that and are the most educated of the six children. I think education is a form of prepping in my family.

Then on to Albuquerque N Mex with all the family coming into DD1's home. Stacked like cordwood there but so much fun!! We all loved watching Quoye (age 2) open presents. She would stop and play with the toy and we all played with her. Present opening went on for some time. :D

I am loving your blog! The pictures today had me laughing!

I was interested in how Americans specify cents on their cheques as fractions of a dollar, so I googled it. This page came up which seems to be tips for Indians moving to America.

    http://www.immihelp.com/newcomer/writing-a-check-tips.html

However, I wasn't sure if this was a joke website when I read the following:

Not sure how helpful that advice is. Maybe Mila can confirm. :)

Probably most use debit cards but many still use cash (from from my experience in the grocery, Walmart lines)
I once wrote a check for .95 cents.
But few use checks anymore except for paying bills through the mail.
    The check example is correct.
Many people would write $127 89/100 in the numbers spot instead of a decimal but either is recognized as ok. The written part is standard.
When I pull out a check at Walmart it's a bit of a shock to the clerk because they are so infrequently used now. The check goes through a machine and automatically takes the money out of the account, so no more window to deposit before the check hits the bank. Many places no longer take checks if they don't have the machine that gives this capability (think mom and pop businesses).

I always carry cash esp when traveling. I got into a real pickle on a four month trip to Israel. (Love Teresa May's response to our outgoing President's treachery by the way!!!)
I tried to use my debit and it was blocked. I called the bank (had to wait because of the time difference) and was told I should have signed a form saying I would be in a foreign country. A heated argument ensued because I had told the bank cashier I was leaving the next day to fly out and she failed to mention the new rule. The bank branch manager was insistent she would not release my money (my gosh she recognized my voice as our kids had grown up together). I finally threatened to call the bank president who is my step daughter's uncle on her mother's side. She backed down at that point. I was furious. She assured me there would be training of her cashiers, which she had evidently failed to do.
All this taught me that you just never know when you will be in a pickle and need cash.
    I ALWAYS CARRY CASH!!!!!!

 Righty, my lovelies, am about to put this pooter to bed and get on with celebrating the end of the year (I may have a second small sherry, too early to tell). Nothing too riotous as I have to be up and out early tomorrow as Provincial City needs one of its errant daughters back and gawd knows what's been going on in Shoebox Towers in my absence - SuperGran will update me on request.

Have a good evening and see ya next year. GQ xx

Thanks Mila. That was interesting. I guess it pays to have friends in high places. :)
  • I trust you've all made good use, of the extra bit of time we got last year. :D
