Anyone know if the new £1 coins are going to fit into supermarket trollies or if every trolley in the country is going to need a new coin mechanism? Just occurred to me that if there's only a window of 6 months when both old and new coins are in circulation that's quite a short time to organise it if they do need to be changed.
Just curious
Apparently the supermarkets have a plan in place to roll out new fittings on trolleys by March. That's all I know, not whether they accept both or not.SaveSpend less now, work less later.0 -
Re the under 25s, a convo at work this month between 45-55 y.o.s and with a 30 y.o. listening in revealed that they had no idea that there'd ever been such a thing as half-day closing or a time when you couldn't shop late into the evening in supermarkets or shop at all on Sundays. They were literally boggle-eyed at the very idea of restricted retail.
Try 'em with the concept of resale price maintenance, pre-1965 style ...
Or maybe the idea of pharmacists having to dispense prescription medicines in plain brown bottles rather than any packaging with the maker's name on, until we joined the EU and Brussels said that prescription medicines had to be dispensed in the maker's packaging ...We're all doomed0 -
I'm not old enough to remember RPM, although I'd heard about it from my parents. I can't really recall pre-decimal currency, either, although I was around in that era, I was too wee to be handling cash. Some of it was still floating around in the 1970s, doing double-duty as decimal currency.
Not that the family had a lot of cash, anyway (cue the mournful violins, the miming of playing a violin being our family's way of poking fun at anyone of us who we feel is hard-timing it).
Guys, if you ever get hold of pre-decimal currency (not the coppers) the quick & dirty way to sort it for silver is to check if the king has a beard. If it's a clean-shaven guy or the present queen, it's base metal. Coins with dates up to 1919 is 92.5 % silver, 1920-1946 is 50% silver. Currently being bought for scrap at about 14 x and 25 x face, respectively.
Turn out yer drawers now (ooo-err missus).Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

What about Exchange Control? In my youth we could only take an absurdly small amount of money abroad. I can't remember the details but it was hard to do a family holiday on the amount allowed to be taken out of the country....Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

New gizmo bought in a CS on Christmas Eve for OH. I am so generous. It's a pull-cord food processor which I thought would be great for him in his campervan when wild camping. It's a Zyliss and Lakeland have them in the sale for £19.99. Mine was just £2.49, completely unused.
He has now given it a whirl and is very impressed. Great if you are subject to a lot of power cuts as we were in Scotland.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

We never went abroad when I was growing up, I went to Forn Parts for the first time as a 19 y.o. on my own and on my own shilling, which was after exchange controls were abolished.
Foriegn travel just didn't feature in many Brits lives until about the 1960-1970s or even later.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Not much to remember really, just that whatever you wanted was the same price wherever you bought it. Assuming it wasn't Sunday, when you couldn't buy it. Or early closing day. Etc etc etc...I can't really recall pre-decimal currency, either
Unfortunately I can, primarily from working in that shop I was on about earlier when I was still at school. I swear if banged on the head in the middle of the night and asked "1/9 each, how much for a dozen?" I'd automatically say "A guinea" ...
Gosh.
I just realised how very old I'm getting ...We're all doomed0 -
If you ever feel the urge to buy something actually priced in guineas, there is still one place in the world you can do so; Tattersalls in Newmarket.
It'd have to be a racehorse, tho.:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
