Handy little gadget from £land.
Probably not the greatest quality, but what do you expect for a quid?0 -
Again, I have my stove (multifuel) for my own peace of mind, to take control of my own usage, stocks, paying for that usage and knowing that my family will be warm if the central heating should not work, for whatever reason. Those reasons far outweigh any other reason and I made that decision based on past life experience, even though I'm asthmatic whose trigger is wood smoke. It's THAT important to me to have control and I'll never enter into a debate about it. Burning wood is as old as man. I haven't read the piece and won't be bothering.0

I spent many years in Scotland with up to three woodburners in the house. Also open fires used occasionally. The secret is to have the wood air-dried for two years after cutting and quite honestly few people have the space and cash to do this. The worst possible thing is to burn pallets, old furniture, softwood and recently sawn logs which have zero warming potential. Homefire anthracite was a great boon if you have a multi-fuel stove but expensive and hellish dusty. The heat from these stoves can't be described if you haven't experienced it but the entire fabric of the house warmed right through creating total comfort. It will be a shame if they are banned and it's a very difficult sector to police.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

As you say, it will be very hard to police. I can't exactly see hundreds of cops flooding every street and demanding access to check the fires.. they haven't got enough cops to stop people being murdered. Whole thing is a piece of nonsense.0

Argh.
FIL persuaded OH's sister to drive him to his midden 'to check it out' and has now declared he's staying there, slammed the door in her face and is going to refuse entry to everybody. He's also apparently been a right pig to OH's auntie despite her waiting on him hand and foot in the run up to this pathetic little display of bravado (which is presumably in response to the information that Social Services were going to be visiting him this week to assess whether it's safe to return there). Apparently, he's bought a couple of supermarket sandwiches for the week. Not sure where he thinks more food is going to come from when he can't even manage to reliably plan the steps needed to make a cuppa. Still extremely adept at manipulating and lying to the people that actually care about him, though.
Everybody seems surprised by this turn of events except me. When hearing about this plan of visiting last Thursday, my immediate response was that it's a really, really bad idea because he's planning his escape. I even suggested that OH called his auntie to discuss it in advance. But no, I was being negative, stressing OH out and it's only a visit for less than an hour.
I am now prepping for having to deal with everything here because OH is likely to have a meltdown/breakdown over it - and a crosscountry dash in the next month or so.
At least I won't have to prep for appropriate clothing. I have plenty of black.
What a bloody waste of a 65 year old's second chance at living a slightly modified but relatively normal life.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

Not far off. It's a bedsit with no bed, a broken sofa wedged up against a massive table and a tiny path to shuffle along through boxes, papers, mould encrusted things (due to the installation of a constant water mister system to deal with orchids, but nothing to catch the water or deal with the humidity) and of all things, a racing bicycle (probably bought 15 years ago and never ridden, but it impressed the 20 something he was having an affair with to be able to spend over £1500 on without considering it might be detrimental to his unsuspecting wife), electrical items in the bathroom (and shower cubicle) and a huge box of random junk that needs to be lifted off the toilet seat to be able to use it/has to be immediately replaced in order to be able to leave said bathroom.
Considering he has now had a series of strokes, has early onset Parkinsons for which he won't accept medication for and, since the last stroke, has only been able to use a commode with assistance as he can't a) make it to the toilet in time and b) hasn't got the strength to wipe himself or operate a flush and c) has lost a lot of control where his bowel and bladder are concerned, if my description of a midden (being a place where rubbish is chucked in ever deepening layers) is unacceptable to you now - well, give it a month and it'll be one in every sense of the word.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

Actually, I've always known a "midden" to be a toilet, ie. an outhouse.
Imagine taking a dump in that, in the middle of winter, with the temperature at well below freezing.
Not quite sure why they cut a crescent shaped hole in the door.0 -
