    Thanks.

On the topic of thin/thick carpets, i would've thought that a shorter pile would've been more suitable for somewhere like living room & stairs, especially stairs, since these will surely be getting walked over more than let's say a bedroom carpet. Buying a thicker pile would've (I thought) just flattened down after some years of walking over the same spots constantly (especially stairs).

A shorter pile, heavy duty carpet with a felt or durable rubber
underlay would be great for an entrance hall and stairs. Soft and plush (as plush as possible) for the upstairs and somewhere in between for a lounge. As mentioned hoovering regularly will help protect the pile and the use of rugs etc will help even more.

Thick recycled wool felt underlay is about £3 sq m. I certainly wouldn't pay anymore as it is excellent.

Rubber backed underlay can perish over time.

Be aware of the pattern you like - the longer the length between the pattern re-occurring, the more carpet you will need in comparison with the area to be carpeted.

If, you have a cat (or the slightest possibility that you may have one) the less wool content the better.

Used Carpetright for stairs & landing carpet, paid for too much - what was over could have done a small bedroom. Wish I tried a small local independent carpet business.
Also, advice looking at off-cuts available - but that may depend on your room size.
