I felt sorry for the lady tonight, her husband buying his own food and what he fancied. What a cheek. £90 for her, their children and the children she looked after and £90 for him. Wasn't difficult to work out where to save money really.
I bet she got to the point where she couldn't be bothered trying with him any more, hence the reason they wereon the programme.
It sounds like I missed out on a fist-through-the-TV programme! What a selfish article!

Haha it was quite funny. But I think she had got so caught up in what the kids would eat he felt a bit left out too - once they all got into it they did find some common ground!

Makes me think though. How many of us jump through a LOT of hoops to give the different members of the family what they want?? I do it - sometimes 3 slightly or totally different meals for 4 of us. My mother never did! Tea was whatever it was - take it or leave it!

It actually really bugged me how smug the husband was in that episode.

The presenters were encouraging her to change the way she cooked, and completely vindicated his selfish choices.

I would have much preferred to see either compromise (telling him he has to eat some bland food even if he doesn't 'fancy' it) or shared responsibility (he cooks more 'exciting' food two or three times a week)

    Otherwise it's just self-entitled and self-justified childishness.

  • It should really be called 'Eat Slightly Better For A Bit Less'. I love it and hate it in equal measure!

My main issue is how they try and improve the healthiness, based on the same old outdated low fat, loads of grains, saturated fat is evil stuff.

For example, I think it was last week where they were trying to make a bacon sandwich healthier by swapping to turkey bacon. If they'd said use the best quality bacon you can afford with as little added nonsense as possible (dry cure perhaps) and swap the white bread for fried eggs then I might not have wanted to throw things at the TV.

The nutritionists/dietitians are just spouting the official NHS/Govt 'healthy' eating advice (and I imagine they are told to by the BBC so maybe not totally their fault) so still vilifying saturated fat, promoting rapeseed oil etc at every opportunity, and just basically attacking the wrong things.

I remember in a previous series they suggested a bagel with chocolate spread as a good breakfast and I nearly fainted!

Having now caught up, I can kind of see the husband's side of things :o. I don't think he had a clue how much he was spending, just felt hungry at the end of the day and knew he couldn't eat bland kiddie-fodder so hit the supermarket chiller cabinets.

It was still shocking to see the waste though.

  • a brief word of caution - 'nuitritionist' is something anyone can call themselves
'dietician' is a restricted term and people must have relevant qualifications to use it. I know its a bit pedantic, but to those of us with dietary issues it is can be the difference between managing a condition and being significantly ill long term

I don't get why as a qualified and experienced dietician, Hala refers to herself as a nutritionist?!

    Yes, he could.

There's am amazing family run restaurant/takeout by me where they cook everything to order and everything from scratch - to the point that if there's something you fancy that's not on the menu (and you're a regular) they'll pop out and buy the ingredients to make it for you.

I'd love to eat there every day. I know we can't afford me to.

I'd love to eat peanut butter on toast for brekky - but my OH has quite a serious reaction so we don't keep it in the house.

I'd love to say 'stuff it' and have cake for dinner, but my family need to eat proper food and need me to be healthy and fit.

Being a responsible grown up is about doing things you don't want to do because your family is more important.

Putting it all on the woman to change because her husband fancies something different is just plain wrong... (IMO)

Probably because TPTB assumed Joe Blogs would think a dietician was about weight loss and a nutritionist was about healthy food.

From the husband's perspective: he works long hours at Heathrow (many do) and then has a drive back to his home in Hampshire...I can see how he would be tired and unlikely to cook himself something separate after work. However he will pass a number of huge supermarkets on his way home, and just didn't keep track of his spends. Don't we all sometimes make rash decisions if shopping on an empty stomach?

I don't often defend men but I can have some sympathy with him. The wife was no better: she needed a separate bottle of beer for herself because drinking it out of a glass just wasn't the same?
