Hi Sammy, thanks so much for replying so quickly. So if he switched to state pension the pension credit would bring it up to what it is currently. Then could they just stay on what they are now and not bother to go onto state pension?

Why would you want to do that? Pension Credit is means-tested, State Pension isn't.

If your parents' income, as a couple, from all sources, is less than the level for Pension Credit, it will be made up to that level. But it may be more than that.

They will not be any worse off as regards income.

I think the OP was under the impression that the PC would stop so dad would get his state pension but mum would get nothing - ie. wasn't able to receive state pension/not of age.

But she isn't receiving anything now in her own name, is she?

The situation will be the same - the PC would have been in his name and so will the pension and any PC top-up.

I wondered whether she was claiming something in her name.

I think what the OP meant was that the PC was for a couple although it was in the dad's name?????

The husband had reached the age where a female would be eligible for state pension.

That was certainly the case for my friend when she lost her job after her 6 months Cont based JSA she was only entitled to £10.00 a week income based JSA because of her husbands pension, when the JC found out they told her that if her husband claimed PC they would get the same amount of money as hubbies pension and her JSA and as she already had enough NICS of her own to qualify for her full pension she wouldn't have to sign on.

My friend assumed that the JC was only trying to get her off their books but they applied as a couple and got it.

Of course as it is an income based benefit as soon as she got a job they closed the claim but they got council tax relief benefits which they also closed down when she got a job, I think there were a few things she couldn't get like free prescriptions, eye tests and dental treatment but she was over 60 so got prescriptions and eye tests free anyway.
