Peugeots Diesel engines (and other makes)

Hi,
I'm took a 48 hour test drive of a Peugeot 308 and they gave me one with the new 120 BHP 1.6 Diesel engine and I really liked it. I never intended to buy a brand new car, I'm happy with a used one but now I'm looking at used examples quite a lot of them have the older 115 BHP Diesel engine.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced both/has views on either of them or knows about their history/reliability etc.
Likewise, other brands. I've read a few reviews about vauxhalls 'whisper' diesel 1.6, also ford seem to have a new 1.5 diesel instead of a 1.6.
Please feel free to share thoughts and opinions.

Do you do the mileage to make diesel the correct choice.
Plus the duration of your trips will come in to play re the DPF ie they need a good run to keep the DPF functioning.

I do around 12k per year for work and anything 2-5k at weekends/evenings. It varies depending on how frequently we go to visit my father in law as he lives approximately 100 miles away. Holidays etc.
I never intended to buy a brand new Peugeot 308, but would buy a used example. I don't know anywhere locally where you can take a 48 hour test drive of a used vehicle. So I took Peugeot up on their offer.0 -
The 308 and 307 have never been blessed with the best reputation for reliability
Before you jump into a decision I would do some proper research into reliability.
Especially with the 1.6 Diesel engine. It is indeed a nice, quiet, flexible engine.
But it does have its issues, possibly partly down to design but certainly relevant is how the vehicle is used and how often the oil in changed. As one of its biggest issues is oil related problems with the turbo.
If I had one I would personally adopt a "severe service" oil change regime, in other words if the service interval is 12k I would do an oil and filter change at 6k, to be fair you could probably just change the oil as the filter will not be affected by leaving it it and the filter is more than up to 12k miles. (Some Manufacturers leave the filter in for more than one oil change interval, a filter gets a little bit more effective as it gets older (within normal usage I don't mean leave it in for life)0 -
search for 1.6HDi on this forum and others for the frequent significant issues with them (turbo oil starvation)0

Never had a thing go wrong with my 308 2.0 HDI SW auto unlike some other French cars I've owned. 50 mpg on a run and went like whatsit of a shovel. Plastic front wings and aluminium bonnet meant easy and cheap repairs if required, wish I'd kept it rather than the extremely thirsty RAV 4 I now own.
That good to here for those intent on buying a 308 as they represent great value for money.
Your 2.0 engine is a much better engine than the 1.6 though.
The C5 2.0hdi Auto is a proper Auto not an EGS box, what is the Autobox on the 308?0 -

My 308 box was the fully auto with torque converter, couldn't get along with the auto/manual box with the stop start. Only draw back was the higher taxation class but still less than the Toyota I have now.0
