I was wondering if somebody could advise me of a good kitchen fitter in the lothian area that is not going to rip me off. I am would like a lot of work done, replacing a back door with a window, and vice versa, knocking a wall down, putting up a partion and door, new flooring, new skirting boards and i would also like my sitting room and hall redecorated, skimmed walls new skirting board and doors. However i am not sure if i should get one company out to do it all and use various different ones.
Also i am off to MFI this weekend to get a quote for my kitchen as they have 50% discount plus and extra 25%, should i take this offer or should i see if i can get it cheaper through howdens, the same kitchen is supplied by both.
It is such a big job i am not sure where to start!
If anybody could give me some advice it would be most appreaciated.:j

Hi
I cant help you with a kitchen fitter in your area, but I can highly recommend the one company approach (from a hassle and stress reducing point of view anyway!). We are in the middle of a house renovation involving new windows, new CH, rewire, structural work, new kitchen, new bathroom and decided to go for a single contractor since we had no real idea of what order to get everything done in. Having seen how the various tradesmen have come and gone over the course of the project, there is no way we could have managed it ourselves. Obviously you may pay more since it isnt possible to shop aroun d for the various jobs, but I reckon the project management fee is money well spent for us0 -
We have just had our kitchen wall knocked down and the builder we have chosen to do everything was on recommendation. We got 3 in to quote for knocking wall down, blocking in a doorway, making good skirting, coving, plastering ceiling and walls, new electrics throughout kitchen and ceiling. The builder has co-ordinated everything so that the guys come in to knock the wall down, put a steel up into the ceiling, block in doorway. Then others came in to do first part of electrics. The guy came back to plasterboard ceiling. We are now waiting for plasterer who will do walls, ceiling and coving. Then electricians come back to finish off sockets and lights. Then first guy comes back to do the skirting....its all run really well, and all because the builder knows the timescales, and what comes next in the line of jobs. We didn't go for the cheapest. We went for the middle quote. The guy was recommended from a couple of different people. We would have got him to fit the kitchen, but my dad knows a good kitchen fitter and we've got mates rates from him, otherwise would have done that through the builder too. We got kitchen from Howdens. Came out £2.5k cheaper than MFI (even with half price sale!). Howdens no longer supply MFI so might not be identical kitchen...do be careful of that.
Next year we want to knock a wall down upstairs and do bathroom. I wouldn't hesitate in getting this builder back in. They've been very good. Very clean. The main guy who quoted us is more or less project managing. He hasn't been on-site a lot of the time but its been good for him to be the only point of contact from our point of view. He know what jobs the other guys are on.
Sorry - no where near you (we are down south!), but good luck. It seems a daunting task now but it will be great when its finished. Take lots of photos.
