Just to add some clarity.... I've had the disk in a spare PC (second HDD), and also put it in to the USB HDD caddy to see if the WD utility would see it. That was the only reason why I put it in the HDD caddy (but WD utility couldn't / wouldn't see it).

I'm not worried about any existing volumes or data I simply want to 're-construct' it as a 4TB drive.

I'll try partionwizzard see if that can help.

    Hi

Just to thank everyone for their assistance.

I went with partitionwizzard in the end which seemed to achieve everything I needed.

I'm sure if I actually knew what I was doing I may have been able to achieve it without it but it's all done now. :D

    Having to resurrect this thread....

I seem unable to to get my ReadyNAS Duo V1 to recognise the 4TB HDD (format it and start syncing).

The firmware is up to date and the version does recognise 4TB drives.

The 4TB drive itself is from the certified list for drives listed by Netgear for the ReadyNAS Duo V1.

The drive itself does work as previously documented I used it as a back-up clone of my failed drive. And, since this thread and resolving re-partitioning I have been able to use it in Windows.

I believe the problem probably relates to the 'messing about' with the drive I have undertaken and so it is not in a state where the ReadyNAS can recognise / utilise (format) it appropriately (my guess).

EDIT: This is the error message I get:

The disk attached to channel 2 could not be used. The most common reasons are RAID resync in progress, faulty drives, and disks that are too small to be added to the array.

Obviously I've googled the error but it is a fairly generic message and I can't seem to find anything that gives me a route to resolve it.

I have tried switching between different boot sectors and formatting the drive to be EXT3 (which is, as far as I am aware what ReadyNAS Duo V1 requires). But no joy.

I'm relatively confident that the drive is good but have no idea what I can do to 'reset' the drive and help ReadnyNAS Duo recognise it (ReadyNAS running RAIDar v4.1.6).

It would be great if there were a reset to factory default switch somewhere :)

Try deleting all partitions from the 4tb drive. Then stick it back in the NAS and see if it recognises the empty drive and reinitialise.

Deleted the volume; the boot sector went to 'Basic' and the volume was 'unallocated' but.... No joy, same message.
