Claiming PPI from Shop Direct

Options
Hello, I'm trying to claim from Shop Direct Catalogue for a friend, he's got mental health problems, was unemployed and registered disabled. All this was also the case when he started paying the Extra Care Advantage. Someone did notice some time ago that he was paying it and realising it would never have paid out cancelled it for him but he has only recently realised that he might have a claim.
I have written to them twice already and all I've got back is the starting date of his two accounts, his signature on the credit agreement and a reminder that he has to pay on time every month.
They have completely ignored the PPI claim.
Can anyone advise me how to continue. Do I need to ask for an SAR on both accounts?
He has some statements going back quite a long time and I estimate that he has paid about £900 from those statements but that may not be all that he's paid.
It seems so complicated that I'm tempted to get him to claim through a company.

It sounds like you have simply asked for details of the account.

Assuming you have a letter of authority, you need to make clear that you are complaining that it was unsuitable for him.

How did he come to take out the cover, though? - and the loan for that matter?

Well he has ordered loads of stuff from two catalogues which he owes £3,500 on in total so not a loan as such and he certainly wouldn't have signed up for the Extra Care Advantage payment protection off his own bat, he says it just appeared on his statements? If he had been asked if he was unemployed or registered disabled he definitely would have said yes, he isn't that incapable but if he was asked to sign something he wouldn't have read the small print. but he doesn't remember signing anything.

Am I correct in thinking that if the PPI is before 2005 there's no point in going to the ombudsman?
    Thanks

It depends on who sold the PPI.

A bank or other, larger, organisation... pre 2005 is probably going to be ok.

A smaller organisation - like a car dealer... you might have some problems.

Store cards and catalogue shopping accounts can also be troublesome if they were taken out before 2005. However in some cases, the underwriter of the policy is happy to take responsibility for the sale. That's the case for products such as Marks and Spencer store cards and, relevant to this thread, Shop Direct products.
