Well, on one end you seem sincere and say that it's your mistake, on the other you go "but the envelope didn't look official, not fair". Either owe to the boning up or keep kicking your feet in anger.

But onto your question, repo people cannot enter your property so lock the car in garage and wait to be contacted about it. Additionally send your position to them in writing, owning in full to the screw up and with a number to contact you, noting that you have debit card with you at all times to resume payments.
They may take you on it or they may take their way out. You are on their mercy with only thing on your end is that you have, right now, possession of the car.

Oh, and read your mail. It takes no more than 5 minutes a day.

I totally hold my hands up, it's 100% my fault ... the whole thing about the official letters was more about having a notification of any court proceedings or notification of who the company is that it has been passed to so I can speak to them directly. My problem is that I don't know if they're on their way tonight or in 6 weeks time and if they'll even get in touch or just turn up unannounced and take the car. Paying the arrears isn't a problem, I could double the monthly payments if that's what they want and half the term of the contract ... I'm not trying to do the whole "woe Is me, I thought they wouldn't notice" kinda thing, it's a genuine mistake and lack of judgement on my part.

See, one of the main points of envelopes is that they cover up the information inside.

Are you genuinely suggesting that an envelope should have "intent to serve court proceedings" printed on the outside so that everyone could see it?

No, I do read my mail, I only put it to the side if I know it's a bill / junk, ie from Scottish Power, 3, etc ... you know instantly when you get one who it's from if it's one of those.

(Usually cause it's got a logo on it, or has a return address of Livingstone on it, which is the bank)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Is this a joke? You've missed five payments without checking or noticing?

I'd hazard a guess that your car payments are large enough that you should notice your bank balance is higher than it should be.

You mentioned a figure of £800 and that you will be able to pay within 4-6 weeks... why can't you pay right now? After all, your balance now should reflect the surplus money that you haven't paid but would surely have budgeted for.

Sorry, but I don't believe the story.

The figure of £800 is irrelevant. The agents will want full immediate payment (with extra fees) or the car back. You should check your credit reports to see if you have been defaulted. If you have that might tell you who the debt is with. If you haven't then maybe get a loan to pay them off. In either event it is going to be expensive.

They would not have issued court proceedings, they don't need to , but they will have sent at least a couple of letters warning you of the consequences and have now exercised their right to reclaim their goods. Depending on the lender the debt will not have been passed on, they have employed a repo man, quite often one man bands with a tow truck or maybe one of the big companies. So the only way of finding out is to ask the lender but as they won't tell you then you need to hide the car at all times - even if you go out shopping - until you can come to an agreement with them. The small operators are the sneakiest, no car on the back of their tow truck no pay so they can turn up at the most unlikely time and place.

Darren I think you missed the point that the OP would pay but he can't find out who to pay !

I think the point Xbigman was trying to stress was that the option to pay what's owed and carry on with the finance will have gone. They will want full repayment of the outstanding loan amount, not just the missed payments.
