I was just about to post the same! What van is it?
400-series Sprinter is about the only "normal-size" van that's 3.5t+. Apart from that, you're into the Iveco Daily sort of range.

Straightforward enough to get them downplated to 3.5t.

The size of the van makes no difference to his insurance status.

No, but downplating it would prevent further similar prosecutions...

Insuring it for business use would do it, that what he's asking about.

I was thinking of the original stop for being overweight across the bridge.

He's still likely to be stopped for the same thing, even if it's just to read his plate.

Depends how much comes up - if the DVLA's entry for Revenue Weight is shown, then that's the only relevant figure.

So he'll need to be stopped to read the plate.

No, if ANPR in a police car picks the plate up, and gives the revenue weight (I don't know if it does), then the Police already have that figure - because the downplating will include amending the DVLA record. So there won't be any need, because they'll see that the vehicle that's just gone over a 3500kg GVW max bridge is rated at 3499kg instead of, as appearances may initially suggest, 4500kg or whatever. They'll also see that the vehicle is listed on MID, and have little cause to question whether it's correctly insured for the use it's currently being given.

ANPR doesn't work that way. If there's no reports on the vehicle, say stolen or no insurance it won't tell them anything.
