Insect repellent deet

Planing a trip to Peru doing the inca trial and the jungle in October, I've been checking out the best insect repellent. The ones recommend all contain deet,I'm not really happy with using this due to the warnings on labels about keeping away from plastics and synthetic clothing. Not happy with putting anything on my skin that can melt plastic :(
As anyone used a repellent without deet, I've seen one called incognito
Any info would be helpful.

The only really effective and long-lasting mosquito repellents are the ones containing DEET. You may find that more natural ones containing citronella and such are effective enough for short periods, requiring more frequent application, and depending on the voracity of the local insects. But it's better to have some DEET with you in case it's needed. Locally produced brands will be just as effective as expensive fancy brands available in UK, as long as they contain DEET.

It's wise to protect your feet and ankles when traveling in a vehicle, as the Aedes mosquito which carries Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika is clever at hiding quietly under seats and in footwells.

At minimum a 50% DEET concentration is really the best option but you can minimise the amount you need by wearing loose light coloured clothing that covers as much as possible.

Its not a nice chemical but it is effective and you wont be using it for a particularly long period and your not made of plastic :)

Malaria carrying mossies mostly bite at sunrise/sunset but as said others bite during the day.

I would recommend the use of nets around the bed when sleeping.

Living in Cyprus I can tell you that nothing else touches DEET , Start taking odourless Garlic capsules a few weeks before your trip.
  • I concur about garlic. I eat loads of it when in Kenya. Plus brewers yeast is effective too although there's a wally lurking who will debunk this. I've tested it on Kenyans and they agree it works as a repellent too.

My sister is travelling Africa at the moment using only incognito and she has said it is just as effective as deet. She has some bad reactions to some of the deet product so was glad to find something better on her skin :) Plus the incognito has a two year shelf life once opened so great for lots of smaller trips.

On another note, can you let me know your itiniary for Peru? I'm currently planning a trip there for next May and other than doing the inca trail I'm struggling to create and itiniary (I want to do it ALL!!)

There is a Deet free mosquito repellent called Odomos. This has very little smell and comes from India and is available at Amazon or on Ebay.
This is an excellent product and I can highly recommend it. We have just used it on holiday in Corfu, there were four of us in the party and only one person got four bites, because she didn't use it properly one night.

Although Dabur makes mostly Ayurvedic and herbal products, Odomos appears to have a 12% DEET content, which is probably why it is so effective.

I believe the blue tube may have a small percentage of Deet, but we used the green version which claims to be 100% natural.

Yes, looking further there's an Odomos Naturals version 'with the goodness of Citronella and Aloe Vera'. But if you check the list of ingredients on the tube I think you'll find it contains DEET or NNDB (N,n diethyl benzomide), a related compound.
