From what we've been told, they made a copy of the document to correct the rent.

This is typical stupid agent's work, yes. This isn't what OP is trying to claim.

    They found each other ;)

I'm sorry OP, but you agreed to a rent of £650, but when you saw an obvious error in the contract, rather than point it out, you ignored it hoping to benefit from this drafting mistake.

You say you are happy to pay the £650 you agreed, so pay it. What the Agent did is dishonest, but it has not caused you any loss. Maybe send them a copy of the original contract if you want them to explain their subterfuge, but probably just a simple drafting mistake by a busy admin that someone has tried to correct without making waves.

I agree with your post except for the bolded part.

Forging someone's signature by what ever means is totally unacceptable and would, I imagine, be viewed by a judge in the same way.

I am inclined to agree with the post that said the OP is legally bound to the lower rent as signed for in the original contract (and presumably showing in the OP's own copy)

However, morally the Op should have pointed out the mistake (in my opinion).

If the OP sticks to the original agreement and pays the lower rent (by the way what amount was the deposit and first month's rent?) then the landlord would have to go to court to get a decision, sue the landlord if the judge found in the OP's favour and have a lot of hassle.

The OP has options and has to do the choosing.

What I find extraordinary is the assumption that the letting agent has made a clerical error and rectifying it the way they did is no big deal.

Legislation has been brought in to make letting agents more accountable. If no one insists that they are accountable then nothing will change to improve their services.
  • Regardless of what the rent level is/isnt - THE thing I would be most concerned is having my signature forged.

I would go ballistic about that point. This is one of the "protections" we all have for many different things - ie that we have to put our signature on an official document for many things.

If other people forge that signature - it could leave US open to all sorts of problems.

You have to stop them in their tracks on thinking that is acceptable conduct. Personally - I'd be worried whether some even dafter little employee of theirs then thought it was okay to forge my signature on something else.

I would go ballistic as well.

    Surely this is illegal.

Let your LL know immediately about his agents incompetence.

Hope you enjoy your new home.

Thought you would agree with the agent and forging signatures is ok.
