Just to the right of the tank is a downpipe from neighbours guttering , which i think makes us near water

I think i`ll just get a couple of people to have a look and go from there , the tanks at least 14 years old so i knew i had to do something when i bought the house.

    cheers all

Personally I interpreted "near water" as meaning "near a watercourse - or a body of water". Near a neighbours downpipe isnt "near a river, stream or lake" - which is what I think they mean by this.

From my reading (a couple of years back on this now) I seem to recall that the rationale was in case the tank leaked and the leaked oil headed into said nearest watercourse/body of water and polluted it. But then my reading was along the lines of finding there are various guidelines/authorised firms to abide by when it comes to removing them safely. Thought hadnt crossed my mind - as I'd never encountered oil tanks before moving - but it made sense to me that it would be "careful as she goes" about anything to do with them.

Not sure , if oil was to leak into the storm drains i think that qualifies as bad!

Have one of the local oil delivery firms coming out next week so will see what they say

    Cheers

  • Well - yeh....storm drains and the water in them would eventually go to wherever it went to (like into the sea for instance :().

The water near us is a dyke which runs into a river. Saying that it rarely has water in it.

If you can't achieve the distances required to combustible material/surfaces, a 30minute fire-rated barrier needs to be erected between them and the tank. This barrier must be at least 100mm from the surface of the tank.

I have no real experience with fire ratings, but basically it means a material which won't be breached by a fire within 30mins, so something 'fireproof.'

Marley Eternit is what comes to mind for this.

6ou3P9.jpg This is our tank. I reckon it's about 30 feet from the dyke and 20 feet from the bungalow. Excuse the mess!

For interests sake to close the thread , a local oil supplier supplied me a single skin tank which is now sited on 2 lintels , 3 slabs , on top of the existing blocks
The tank is well out the way but i might get round to shielding it somehow from the garage at some point

£800 inc vat which included disposal of old tank , pump hire , new tank (£310) lintels and slabs

for now , it will do
