How have you saved money while holidaying in rural England?

  • I have lots of rural holidays in UK as I love walking etc. I use a friend's caravan in Pembrokeshire for next to nothing, cook my own meals and take a picnic when out walking. I have friends in Seaford (for walking the South Downs) who are happy for me to stay anytime, and family in Cornwall who don't charge me, although I do make a 'donation'. I've just returned from a few days in rural Suffolk where I stayed at a B+B in the middle of nowhere - double room was £50 per night, not bad for 2 sharing, and it was delightful. I also find that holidaying with groups of friends can work out much cheaper, and I'm lucky to have walking chums all over the place!

We have short breaks and travel by train.

I think rural uk still has a lot of work to do to be more accessible to those with limited mobility.

I am fed up of phoning B&B's and guest houses that describe themselves as having disabled access to be met with.. 'oh yes we have a ground floor bedroom but there are three steps into the building, don't worry we'll help you climb them'.

Our beaches could do with boardwalks or roll out matting to allow those who use wheels and walking sticks to get onto the beaches without sinking int sand.

Our beautiful countryside is very hard to access if you don't have a car and have limited walking ability.. there are schemes but greater publicity on tourist info sites is needed.

We have so much to offer in terms of countryside, seaside town and city breaks it would be great to see things tidied up and advertised.

Sadly I often hear from friends its cheaper to holiday abroad than stay in UK, i have friends who have travelled widely but never been out of their own corner of the UK.
