Hotel card transaction

Hi, I am in Ibiza at the mo and yesterday paid for wifi ,the new island tax etc on my halifax clarity card. Last year [same hotel] they did the transaction in euros, stupidly I presumed it would be the same. When we got to our room and I checked the receipt I saw they had done the transaction in sterling. I went down and queried it.
They said that from this year they were only processing transactions in the currency the card was linked to,are they allowed to do this, also should they have informed me before the transaction was made?

No they are not allowed to do so without your permission.
They should void it and re-present in the local currency or your card company/bank should take care of it..

If they insist you can ask for the 'complaints book', a kind of form, and report them to the local police. Regulations oblige them to give the choice.

I'm not sure if this will be possible if the transaction was yesterday. Voiding can only be done for a limited period.

Thanks for the replies, I willhave another chat with reception and see what they say.:T

I saw the manageress, she refunded my original transaction then re did it in euros. I mentioned that it was against mastercard t&c's not to ask which currency...apologies and comp bottle of cava. I think from what she said it was the powers to be that tod them not to ask which currency.

Thank you all for the help it was appreciated.
