Record class action over MasterCard 'chip & pin' charges

Shoppers have been ripped off by as much as £400 each due to unfair chip and pin charges in shops, lawyers preparing a historic class action case against MasterCard have claimed.
Millions of consumers stand to receive hundreds of pounds in compensation as the result of a £19 billion pound claim being launched against MasterCard over “illegal” card charges.
Consumer rights campaigners say shoppers were kept in the dark about the charges they were being forced to pay when using their cards.
They say these represented a significant cost for retailers, which were then passed on to all consumers in higher prices for goods and services and for which shoppers should now be compensated.
MasterCard last night refuted the claims, arguing that the cost of using credit and debit cards is far outweighed by the value and convenience they offer to shoppers.

Except that greedy banks also get a percentage of cash payments: small shops have to use banks to look after their takings, and pay handsomely for the privilege.0 -
