Just to bring a close this post of mine - ive done some digging and it turns out that the car started out life in Cyprus.

Probably ex-forces as already suggested but definitely from Cyprus then brought back to the UK. Its got what is considered a UK VIN number for MX-5's so its UK spec etc hence my original confusion.
