Hey all,
Just a quick note. I am heading to Salzburg for a long weekend in about 3weeks and was wondering if anyone had any tips - you know the usual, money saving, eats, trips or days out?
cheers

We stayed in Innsbruck for a week and had a day trip by train to Saltzburg. If you have a copy of 'The Sound Of Music', make sure you watch it before you go.
You can save some money by seeing the film locations yourself, rather than paying to go on a guided tour. Be sure to do a rendition of the 'Do, Re, Me' song on the steps in the Mirabell Gardens.....don't trip on the steps as you jump up and down.:D10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j [/COLOR]:cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Try to get a Salzburg Card before you pay for any sightseeing trip or tickets (we found out too late). It's valid for 24,48 or 72 hours (from the time of purchase) and costs 19/26/32 euros (kids 9.5/13/16) but the price goes up from June 16 onwards.
It gives either free entry or discounts, e.g. free entry to the Zoo (normally 8 euros),the Salzach Cruise (normally 15 euros including entry to Hellbrunn) & Stiegls Brauwelt "World or Beer" (normally 9 euros) - so there's your 3 day card paid for straight away.

When we were there (2 weeks ago), the Salzach Cruises weren't running because of high water, so it may be worth checking first. The Untersberg Cable Car looked really hairy, but we didn't get to go as they weren't too keen on running as the top was in cloud (it wasn't officially closed, but they wouldn't run it for us either...). We did get to the Zoo though - it's quite a mad collection - there are free flying Griffon Vultures and other big birds, the Gibbons were a real hoot and there's a kids petting area but the Big Cats and Rhinos looked somewhat bored
.
There are plenty of full and half-day trips from the city; Grossglockner Glacier, Berchtesgaden, The Eagles Nest & various Salt Mines as well as the ubiquitous S of M  and Mozart tours.
Nice place - liked it a lot.0
